I went for a test ride in an RX-8 withmy dad. It was quick and comfy, but it wasn't anything special. It chirped them going into second (with three full grown men) in the car, but I don't know if you can say that is great or not. The engine is just so smooth, though. It's incredible.
BTW, nice kill.

My dad has a RX-8, and i have a modified 83 GS with stockport gsl-se engine with dellorto carb and racing beat complete exhaust, and i can tell you that i am not really far away on a 0-100 MPH run with the rx-8, maybe 1 car length... My car has lots of weight reduction also

You say a ported 12 a or even a supercharged 13b would not be running 14.5 ish? Your right, it would prolyl run low 14's or high 13's. **** a supercharged 13b 1st gen can easily run low to mid 13's. I guess youve been watching 1st gens with v8 swaps running or something. Cause dam. Rx-8s are nothing special. And as far as im concerned the fastest time seen on a stock one was 14.7 by motortrend. My friends have rx8's and 1st gens. I know one rx8 wont count for all of them, but that rx8 is nothign out of this world. Try paying attention next time you see a ported or supercharged/turbo 1st gen run. If they run slower than a 14.5, there are obviously traction or mechanical problems. Maybe driver error big time.

As an RX8 owner I will admit that they aren't that fast. I have to give it credit for being a quick car, but it is about 3000lbs, and many of us don't believe that it gets the revised hp number of 238. Probably more like 210-220. But you need to understand that 98% of these cars haven't got huge mods. There's no big hp grabbers out ther. When a good turbo kit comes out, or the mazdaspeed version, it will be a fast car. For now we have to settle for suspension upgrades.
However, there is a new tuner in Calgary (Canzoomer) who has made a piggyback ecu. I'm looking into getting one for myself real soon.

Maybe the guy launched and didnt want to race faster than a little over the speed limit.

I owned an 82 12a and 86 13b se in the day. No way they could keep up with the MT GT RX- 8 I own now. It would have slaugtered them. Does'nt seem right to me either.

I call B/S. First of all, as mentioned before, 1/4 mile times. Second, Lt. Dan you said 158 rwhp with a stock Nikki? I haven't gotten anyway near that with a Sterling Nikki, same setup otherwise. ****, Paul Yaw never got those numbers with his modded carb. If you say flywheel hp I might believe you. Show me the dyno slip.
P.S. nice death thread revival RXcited.

how about this, stop trying drag race with daily driven 12a's. The 12a is an anemic little sister. When it comes to drag racing anyway, now circut or auto-x is different. But I will say this, driving skill is a HUGE factor.

Perhaps the 8 owner was slowing down for other drivers nearby to take a look at the 8. Forget the speed in the 8, we all know that's not why we bought the car. For the looks, and for the love of rotary. If it wasn't for the 8 coming out, the likelihood of a future 7 would be dim.
Would anyone take a second look at an FB on the road? (Other than another Rotary enthusiast that is)... but no chick in their right mind would choose the FB's styling over the 8
The FD on the other hand... well that's a totally different beast. Fast, looks good even to this day, I kinda miss my old FD.

She has her shiny paint, her rims are shiny even though they have some mild scrathes on them what 20 year old car doesn't? but STILL shiny , 1 inch drop in suspension Falken 205, 60R13 87H tires, and a transmission that sounds like a freaking turbo when it revs up and shifts just without the BOV's swish effect . But I am looking at selling her. I have to many RX-7's around I can't keep up with them all. My '78 needs some MAD attention. The '90 GTU needs some Tranny and engine work. Just not enough money or time for them all. I am asking perhaps $2,000 due to bringing her up out of the dead. PM if you are interested. I will be posting in the for sale section.

Geez, give the guy a break. I believe you Dan. Alot of variables are involved with racing. If the Rx-8 didn't rev up to its potential than thats the drivers fault. If he mis-shifted or anything else thats just how it is. Everyone speculating and no one was there. He posted happily what happen, he won, and the owner gave him props. Yet people have to bash, call BS. This forum is better than that.

Test Drove an Rx8 with 5K on the ticker.
For what it is worth, I test drove an Rx8 at my local Mazda dealership. I was pretty disappointed. Mind you, these are subjective opinions based solely on my test-drive. I know very well what the magazine numbers show, but the Rx8 I testdrove certainly didn't feel like a 14 second car or even a 5.9 second 0-60 winner. The car felt a little quicker than my old 89 GTUs, but not much. It didn't seem to rev very fast. Of course, I am biased in favor of my higher horsepower TII. So, I personally think the guy racing the Lieutenant was driving the Rx8 hard. The Rx8 didn't feel as strong as your average 2nd gen TII. Don't get me wrong, the 8 is a very nice car, but it needs a turbo. Just my 2cents worth.

This is a cool thread!
It's funny to hear people argue! I've almost read the whole thing
Well, I own an rx8 and I can say it's a pretty quick car for a na 2 rotor. But I haven't got the opportunity to ride in an fb either. I'd probably say it was auto and he did win. The auto isn't that quick and doesn't have as much power as my 6 speed. You have to realize a lot of owners aren't rotary enthusiast or even auto enthusiast. It's a shiny new car that looks really nice and theirs no reason for people with the money not to buy one. RX7 owners usually are auto fans and know what their doing so that's my 2 cents.
Probably aint worth much but that's my take on it.

still calling BS, only Rx-8 you can beat with 158rwhp is one with problems, and you said it jumped off the line in the beginning and the automatic can't do **** off the line.
