Turbos For SOLO II & SOLO I

What are people running for turbos in these classes? My personal focus will be SOLO I and longer SOLO II tracks (Corvette Club) when I get my car ready, but I need to replace my stock turbos now. What sort of turbos are you running in these classes and what would you recommend based on your own personal experience?

Hey brad, it's Johann. How much power at the wheels did you get from that? Have you dragged it? IF so what were your times?

I haven't drag'd it yet because I've only tuned the Wolf up to 6000 rpms....busy Summer (whats left of it

I tuned it up to around 20psi @ 6000rpm's and after that I'm scared I'll get there sometime in Sept... My guess its around 400rwhp, but should peak out at 420-430rwhp...

BTW: My buddy Luis bought your G-Force chip, the one I sold you, remember?.....small world huh? I ran a 12.0 @ 116mph with that....Luis ran an 11.80.......!!!! bitch!

As always, it depends on what class you want to run. For SOLO II, I'd recommend the stock turbos unless you can get a really nice BB turbo that'll spool very quickly. Low speed corner exits, where lots of torque are required, hurt the rotary the most. I have yet to see a single turbo equipped FD beat one with stock turbos in SOLO II. Not saying it won't happen, but I've seen some damn fast stock turbo'd RX-7s out there. Remember, if you go with aftermarket engine/boost management that kicks you out of SS or ASP and in to mod. Because of this and a larger radiator, I run in SM2.

For SOLO I, the sky is the limit! I'm still using stock turbos at 12.5 PSI as HP is not a limiting factor in my case (leaning to drive smoothly and quickly is). I can hang with the fastest cars in my region on the straights (911s, modded Mustangs, 'Vettes, etc.), but they lose me in the turns - and the RX-7 is no slouch in that area. In my case, a big single would probably improve my times as I'd be even faster on the straights, but that would not help me learn the twisties any better. A big single won't hurt you nearly as much on a road course unless lag is appreciable.

As of 2 years ago, you can actually run in AP if the number of turbos on the car is the same as stock. I don't have the rule book in front of me but they added it in the fine print for the AP section, at least in the 2000 rules. Just an FYI, EM is not a fun place to be sometimes .

64 views and only 1 guy is running a single in SOLO competition?

Thanks for the input. I beleive I will be going with a single, cause mine are shot and at this point it is cheaper to go with a single. I'm already screwed as far as class registration goes because of my other engine mods, so I may as well do it right.

I was hoping someone with a ball bearing turbo would have some input here, as this is what I am looking for. Someone I know has invited me out to a track day where his boss sometimes brings his Porsche GT1, it would be nice to keep him in sight

I have an Turbo II not an FD, so I've never had a TT setup....I agree, the Twins will take you a long way, but I think if you want a fast spooling turbo that produces more "safe" hp, single is the way to fly... It is different than the stock turbo, but better in more ways than not...
