SM2 turbos

What kinda turbos are the FD guys running in SM2? Ive been out of the game for several years (check the join date). Ive done alot of autocross in my WRX so I know what the SM guys are running but Im in the process of picking up an FD finally and Im looking to run SM2 now instead of ESP. I figured maybe something like BNR twins or maybe even a small single like an RX6. Whats the word?

Stock twins run sequentially or upgraded twins run sequentially is the only way to go.

I figured that would be the best way. I didnt know if any of the single turbo technology had gotten to the point where you could run bigger since Ive been active on here last. What size AS05s or 710s are people squeezing under the fenders?

As wide as you can fit and still be able to keep heat in them. 275/40/17 Kumho V710's might be a good place to start if your car isn't fully prepared or your making less than 350rwhp. If your up past 350rwhp and can keep heat in the tires get some fender flairs. The car I am referring to has carbon fiber fenders front and pettit fender flairs rear and runs 295/40/17 V710's front and 315/35/17 rear. I think Andy Mckee is running 335/35/17 rear and maybe 315/35/17 front. 265/45/16 might also be worth taking a look at to get the car a tad bit lower.

285-30-18 on a 10.5 is a good set-up with minor trimming. The 275-40-17 is a bit tall, but can work(both all around, as stock). You'll get more than your monies worth out of the 710s. Carl

Hmm looks like I may keep the stock turbos on and just run in ASP instead of SM2. The car Im looking at has a brand new set of konis on it so Ill more than likely just get a Ground Control kit for it instead of dropping $$$ on a big name brand coilover. I have a good source for 275/40/17s and there is a nice tire contengency locally so 710s are actually the choice over the hoosiers.

I went to a GT35R setup and like it much better than the stock sequentials. With short gears (4.77) the lag is pretty much nonexistent and the torque curve much more manageable than the stock twins.

With the prospect of boost control being possible in SP classes (not legal currently) it might be $marter to build the car for ASP. However, I'm not sure when boost control would be allowed, as it is still being disussed. 2006 at the earliest.

You need to have the kind of turbo that has a 3 rotor attatched to it.
I was going to go down to the Toledo Pro this coming weekend but had to cancel. Erik Strelnieks will have his 3 rotor FD there it looks like.
ASP is a good class to be in. I was there until this year and decide I wanted more competition and upped to SM2. I have a piggyback PFS purple to control boost on the stock sequential twins and the car is up to the task... the driver not always.

I would put the money you were going to spend on a turbo and get the best tires you can and enter as many events as you can. Then wear those tires out and get new ones etc. etc. etc. Congratulations you are an Auto-Xer

Yeah Im already looking forward to spending twice as much money on tires for the 7 as I do for the WRX. Teaching myself a completely difference drivng style should be fun as well.

What kinda IC are you running with that single? I suppose picking an IC setup is actually harder than the turbo setup because you either deal with the SMIC heatsoaking bad between runs or run the risk of overheating with the FMIC. I know people are now looking into the Vmount designs to try and get the best of both worlds.

I have a Greddy SMIC with a fan that runs all the time, plus I water it down between runs. I will probably go to a larger IC (not by alot) at some point and will look at a Vmount setup. I wouldn't put a huge IC on there as that may not be the best thing for response on an autox course. My guess is that something about the size of the ASP Medium is about right.

I am using the Peter Ferrell Supercars SMIC with good results. I ice or water between runs also and always pop the hood and run fans.

If I had a dedicated track car Id look into an air to water setup but SMIC makes the most sense if you can keep it cool enough.
