RX-7 Competition????

If driver skill was equal. What cars would give the RX-7 the most competition in it's SCCA class? Is there any other car besides the RX-7 that you wish you had, (in the RX-7 Class).

Brett.

SCCA what .... SoloII, SoloI, ITA, ITS, SS, ProSolo? Restrictions for the "RX-7 class" are different depending on what type of racing you prefer. And within some types of racing, there are several classes that you can compare, also varying in how modified your RX-7 is. SoloII Super Stock .. that's a no-brainer: Z..0..6.

no place for fd rx7 to run in scca club racing...can run in speed channel gt racing; so many restrictions make fd rx7 hopeless money pit in gt racing.

outclassed in scca solo ii by z06 in ss, might be competitve in sm2...waiting on sleepr1's results...

open lapping fd rx7 is very competitive with high end cars costing more. hot weather's hard on fd rx7s.

in SCCA ITS, the E36 BMWs are kicking butt. the other car you can never count out is the 240Z. and last but not least, don't rule out the Integra GS-R. we have one running every once in a while at Summit Point and he runs in the top 5. right now the Bimmers are taking the top 3 or 4 spots. we don't really have any 944s that are front runners.

Frazer, are you talking about the older 240z or the newer 240sx?

Brett.

Don't forget that the S14 version 240SX 16v is in ITS also. Couple of them running in the southeast, but not with any success. Not enough motor for the Bimmers, and not enough brakes for the FCs.

In ITS, it's currently E36 country right now. Small wonder when the Comp Board classifies them at 2850 when they have a curb weight of nearly 3200 pounds! While the FC is currently classified at 2680, which puts it within about 100 pounds of its curb weight, I believe.

Just when you thought things couldn't get any crazier than guys paying $35K for a SpeedSource RX7, a turn key Bimmerworld ITS BMW currently runs about $45K!

Last time I spoke to him, Brian Zalner said he was returning to ITS in 2003. I'd expect to see him somewhere near the front.

then i stand corrected. the reason i said we didn't have any competitive 944s was because i haven't seen brian at the track. brian and his 944 are a quick combo, even though i'll be surprised if he beats the bimmers.

and yes, i was talking about the old 240z.

if my memory serves me correctly, ITS at Summit Point usually consists of E36 and one or two E30 BMWs, 2nd gen RX-7s, a lone Integra GS-R, 944s, and the stray Sentra SE-R.

hey chris! i found a used bimmerworld ITS E36 for sale. something like $27k. damn they're expensive.

Mike,

Don't jump to the dark side just yet. The Comp Board is rumored to be asking for membership input regarding competition adjustments in IT. Not sure what path it will take, but just having them interested enough in IT to consider it is a step forward. Give the E36s around 200# and we'll have a go at 'em! Their current 2850 is a complete joke.

Have you written the Comp Board yet Chris? I've sent them a letter asking for clarification of the formula used to obtain weights of new cars and how that formula was applied to the E36 specifically. Got the idea from the thread on the IT boards.

Switch to a BMW? No way! Love my '7. Don't think my comment came out right. Just commenting on the cost of some of the BimmerWorld BMWs. Even though used cars from the SpeedSource stable aren't cheap. I wonder what they'll do w/ the BMW. Like you said, give them a little weight and things should be about even. Just gotta keep the hammer down.

Just a heads up: I'm completing the car and have been shopping through your catalog to place an order. I'll give you a buzz.

Note to racers: Chris (Wire) was great to deal w/ when I was shopping for my splitter. Returned my calls and got my stuff to me quickly.

I'll post pics once the car is completed and painted.

Thanks!

Mike

Chris and Mike,

I haven't yet written my letter as I'm still trying to sort out my thoughts on the matter. On the one hand, Kip Van Steenburg won the SARRC Runoff at Savannah this year, ditching his E36 in favor of his RX7 after 2 full days of testing prior to the event. Savannah is probably the one track in the Southeast were hp matters the least. It's a momentum track.

On the other hand, the ARRC was a complete joke. And let's face it, who is closer to the end of their development cycle, the RX7 or the BMW? Who stands the best chance of getting faster in the future?

I am not for Prod-style weight adjustments. However, I would like to see an avenue for the Comp Board to correct what I consider gross errors in judgement, whether intentional or not. I am for giving the CB the power to change these anomolies when they present themselves, but not for allowing for weight adjustments on a yearly basis. Let them try to get it right the first time, and if they don't, give them the latitude to fix it. That is what is currently lacking.

The CB had attempted to correct the BMW situation last year by adding 100 lbs. to the E36. The backlash they were subject to was sufficient to get them to change the weight back and go crawl behind the "no guarantee of competitiveness" clause.

That has to change.

BTW, thanks to you both for the props on these forums. I'm glad I can help.

Sounds like your thoughts are pretty clear. To me it's a HP issue. The Bimmers obviously have a butt load of it. Weight will handicap them in the wrong areas. I'd like to see a restrictor. But that's IMO and it's obviously a comp adjustment. And the CB doesn't want to open that can of worms.

Send your letters to the BoD. The CB is not likely to allow competition balancing in IT until the BoD mandates it.... regardless of how many letters they receive.

Contact information for the BoD members is available on www.scca.org.

hey al,

my dad (mark) spoke to Matt Geidl and matt claims brian will be running SRX7 in Thill's car, i belive it was. i dont know why. but he'll probably also run his ITS 944.

the competition of the last few races of the 2002 season in ITS were close between Ed York, of course, and Sam <forget last name>. Sam owned the E30 3-series bim (Trident Media was the sponsor?) and he just boughts an E36. this car made almost 30hp more than Ed's if i remember right. so he went out and qualified on the pole, first time in the car. then in the race (im pretty sure it was the same weekend) he spun, i guess cuz hes not used to the pressure. everyone was questioning this car i remember.

but yes, the E36 bims dominate ITS at the moment.

the guys name is sam asinugo. i think i spelled it right. i was standing right by the fence when he looped it. yes, the car was rocket quick. ed is suck an incredible driver that he's just plain hard to beat. i can't believe he hasn't picked up a pro ride. he also finished 3rd at ARRC this year. sam's car was completely pro built by Turner Motorsports. yes, it fassssssssssssst! and his e30 325 is fast as well, and for sale.

now i just need to finish my '7 so i can go kick some bimmer butt! =)

later,

mike

yes thats the guy... i knew it was a jamaican name like that. his Trident Media e30 is still up for sale?? i thought he sold it already, i dunno tho. my dad and i had no opinion on this, but a lot of guys questioned the legality of sam's car that first weekend. its definately possible that it really IS that fast tho, considering it was built by Turner Motorsports. im sure he prepared that car to the limit, hes got money from what i understand.
