Thumbs up My 1st gen racer

Check out my website for tons of pix, etc. and a blow-by-blow of building my '83 into a SCCA PRO7 race car. You'll dig it.

By the rules, you can't do anything to control boost. The car is setup with the turbo system 100% stock including the pills, running a stock ECU.

Now I know most reading this will say BS, he has to be cheating. There are only two main problems you have to over come in ASP trim. When you open the intake and exhaust, boost will increase. As a result you have the potential of hitting Fuel cut and running lean. We all know that the rotary hates a lean condition and most blown motors are caused by it. The good thing about Autocross is that it is mostly run in first and second gear. Because of this hitting boost cut is not a real problem. I only have an issue when it is fairly cold out. I solve part of this using the RX7's natural ability to cook the engine bay just idling . What I do on cold days is leave the car running between runs so that everything gets heat soaked. So on cold days, my intercooler is acting more as a heater than a cooler.

We all know that if you raise boost, you have to provide more fuel for safe rotary operation. There are 2 ways you can do this and stay legal in ASP. All aftermarket ECU's that I have investigated are illegal in ASP as they ether remove fuel cut as it relates to boost, or move the point at which it comes into play. So what you are left with is to install a piggyback fuel/ignition controller that allows the stock ecu to continue to control boost and boost cut, or find another way to deliver more full. An external fuel/ignition computer would be the best choice, but I choose a different path.

What I did was have my primary and secondary injectors enlarged by RC engineer and added a RRFPR. The stock computer maps are set to deliver a set amount of fuel at any given boost/temp/gear/rpm based on set injector size and fuel pressure. By enlarging my injectors I have increase the amount of fuel delivered at all points in this curve. By adding a RRFPR I can then increase the amount of fuel delivered as RPM and Boost increase. Because I only have to worry about first and second gear it works pretty well. If I had to drive long runs in 3rd gear or above I don't think you could tune enough with this setup to be safe. Only real side effect is I run extremely eye burning rich at idle . If I had to do it again, I would go with the first option . A little known tech tip is that if you have a boost-spiking problem at transition you can adjust the crossover actuator arm to smooth out these spikes.

When I go to track I just throw in my PFC and have "forgot" to take it out at a few local autocrosses .

Not really a race car, just a weekend autocrosser.
This pic was taken at an "Evolution Driving School" and used on there web site for a while.
