Perhaps the air restrictor would have been too small for a turbo 3 rotor or a n/a 4 rotor to make it worthwhile. Surely they don't count a 3-rotor as having the same potential as a 2.0L 4-cyl.
I believe the Porsche runs more power on the shorter races and less power on the long ones. (...actually probably everyone does)
Other than cooling a 3-rotor should be able to produce power in the 500hp range. Take the R26B @ 700hp x 3/4 = 525hp. I don't know that the variable trumpets are allowed in the current regs, but surely technology has improved since the early 90s...

I don't really understand what part Mazda has in all this? AER is building the motor, Lola the chassis. What exactly is Mazda doing? Putting stickers on the airbox?

Mike Lancaster of AER was delighted to be able to talk about the new Mazda MZR-R engine at last. Oliver Allan referred to the engine as “half of the V8”, rather than a relation of the company’s four cylinder engine which has been around since 2001.

It looks like AMR wont be returning to GT1, so I guess Ill be concentrating all my cheering on the Mazda and Ferraris in GT2

not to burst anyones bubble but....even if mazda did build some crazy car they still wont be able to touch the pureness of penske porsche.....think about it those are the best names in racing.......porsche power and penske technology........they need to have the RS Spyder in P1 and not P2

Well, given the fact that Lola is a world class chassis builder whose chassis have won numerous championships, I believe they have the platform to be competitive. Add in the fact that the 2.0L from AER is supposed to have as much HP and more TQ than the Porsche, I dont see why it cant be competitive. It will be able to achieve higher corner exit speeds and be able to move through traffic much easier than the RS Spyder.

lets just see how the 4 mazda Rx-8 do this weekend in daytona.......my guess the goldin bros Rx-8 wont finsh the race (mechanical) and the 2 speedsource cars will do well if they dont break like they did last year and the last car well dont know whos running the 4th car but we will see wht happens

Seems pretty interesting however, i think all those years of research and development for the rotary engine in racing applications has gone to waste. I would much rather see Mazda withdraw from the series all together and come back with a rotary that runs off of alternative fuels (hydrogen or even straight ethanol).
