85mm is too wide. I need 60mm. I'll widen these myself and make molds so I can reproduce if I have a whoopsie

what fenders are those? I like the rear cut in...

It's always bugged me a bit that my fenders are like giant parachutes on the side of my car lol, but at autocross speeds it doesn't matter too much. I might end up cutting vents in them at some point though.

These: 1986 1992 Rmag Wide Body 30mm Fenders Front for Mazda RX 7 FC3S 86 92 | eBay

Sadly they only come in 30mm flavor, so they won't cover your massive tires.

I would have done those instead of my Shines if they had a stock body line instead of the molded in body kit.

I'll be trimming that piece off to meet the body better.

Meanwhile, Beetle Knievel is almost completely plumbed.

Heading to a shop today to talk sponsorship/partnership for the 2016 season.

Clearanced the top of the wheel wells. Now the rads sit right down in. A little welding for mounts and we're money.

There are upsides and downsides to doing things "different"

Because nobody else (that I can find) has done this, I'm the one making the puzzle work.

I spent several hours today making radiator mounts and got things lined up. Decided I didn't like it. I didn't go through all that work to get the fuel cell as low as possible only to put radiators above the damn thing. Back to the drawing board.

A beer and some beard scratching later, I think this is my favorite fix.

This gets the rads mounted about 8" lower than before. A little more clearancing and I'll be able to splay them out just a tad further to make ducting easier.

Same as it ever was - you have to do it a couple times to realize what's really going to work.

Bought myself a new toy today though.

I assume you'll put some kind of ducting to keep debris off those radiators? Looks good.

Yeah I'll have manifolds on both sides to keep things clean - including airflow.

Working out my mounting system tonight

Found a much cleaner, simpler way of doing this. Will update once it arrives...

Eage can I get the deets on your driveshaft and who made it? I'm assuming you still have a TII transmission.

Everything you need to know:

https://www.rx7club.com/2nd-generati...shaft-1081644/

EDIT: my driveshaft is 36.5" and fits pretty well (into my t2 transmission) If you have a non-turbo trans that throws the measurements off, I don't know if the diff, trans or both are different lengths on an NA, might be best to measure yourself.

I have a TII transmission and have been running the Mazdatrix hybrid driveshaft to correct the length to my N/A diff.

Thanks for the link - much appreciated.

The diff is getting rebuilt with the new gears and LSD - but there's plenty to be done.

A little prep and paint

I blue myself

Rad mounts should be in on Tuesday and then ducting work and firewall installation begins.

Meanwhile, Beetle Knievil is ready to hold water and will soon be ready to hold fuel as well. Jeff better get his *** in gear wiring it.

Primed and painted the additions we made to the cage. Freshened up what was already there while I was at it.

Getting the seat home in the Miata was a trick. Good thing we had good weather so I could have the top down.

Meanwhile, Brown Santa dropped off my wing profiles from the water jet shop. These will be the end plates and wing mounts. 1/4" Aluminum.

Was able to grab a couple hours in the shop for "quiet time"

NASA will require working tail lights, which I haven't had. I have a pressure switch I'll plumb into the brake line, but I needed something low draw that would be bright enough to be really seen.

Yay LED cobs!

Happy with the brightness, I went through the process of taking apart me tail lights so I could neatly install the cobs. That whole process sucks and I'm glad the missus didn't see me with tail lights in the oven.

I considered removing the light diffuser, but I like it. I think this remains faithful to the original design too.

Next up, I got some radiator mounts and started customizing them for my needs. I think they came out pretty damn well. Much better than I had originally planned out in my head.

Lastly, my thin wall AL tubing came, so I was able to mock up the wing.

The back of my shop is a mess from woodworking projects.

6 feet wide is just about perfect

Here you can see how things go together

The weather prediction for next week looks warm enough to do some CF work, so the wing may end up getting resined and vacuum bagged next Thursday.

Looking good. My wing made a huge difference on my car. I'm really happy with it.

Mine is 66" wide to meet street modified rules (no wider than the doors). How high are you planning to mount yours? and what are you planning to do for the actual mounts?

any thought to swan neck top mounts?

Going to mount on the bottom with struts made from aero tubing from aircraftspruce. Wing will be even with the roof per class rules.

Love the idea of swan necks, but not the expense.

OK so the fun part is pretty much over. Now it's on to making sure everything will pass tech, which means I need a firewall over the entire rear of the car. Lexan doesn't count.

So long old friend:

There's pretty much only one way to do this and have it look clean and tidy: Big box.
First I made a foam template using my hot wire cutter.

Looks decent, time to make it into metal. Thank god for aluminum.

I'll have to make a vertical piece to close things off completely, then install a hinged door for the fuel fill. Once I get my scoops installed on the rear hatch I'll make ducting to feed air through the firewall to the radiator.

It can't ever be easy.
