Got a Bell Sport III from their Racer series today.
Originally I was looking at a Simpson Super Bandit or Bell M3, but the extra $200 to save a little weight was too much.

I've heard the $50 helmet vs. head thing before, but isn't a motorcycle helmet going to be more than suffiencent? Aren't they designed to save the head from the sort of impact we would inflict to our CARS? My HJC motorcycle helmet was $100CDN ~= $66USD.

motorcycle and SA type helmets are slightly different. they are also tested with different requirements. the thing is you will have to show the helmet to the tech inspector and if it does not say SA then you will not be allowed on the track. both will do a good job of protecting your head in most situations but one is required so this will have to be the one you use. consider safety equipment the "price of admission" to racing. all other parts will make the car faster, but the only required items are safety related.

motorcylce helmets are designed for one blow impacts.
IN a car, if you flip, you may be banged around more then a few times, thus the helmet will absorb more then one impact.
Second, a SA2000 Helmet uses Nomex lining. If you car catches on fire the inside of your helmet won't. While motorcyle helmets will.

I did some helmet searching and can't decide between these 2 helmets:
Simpson Vudo
or
Bell Vortex
Both are pricey. But it seems that there is a strong correlation with price and comfort in fit and air circulation and lightweight.

With the Vudo you are paying for aerodynamics you don't need. Unless you have an open cockpit. That Vortex one can have optional fans built into the helmet for air circulation...

Take a look at the Bieffe Predator. I have had the Bieffe F1, the Simpson LX+, and the Bell SR Pro and really like this one. They aren't terribly expensive either.

I think one of the most important aspects to consider is comfort when wearing a helmet. It's already been said by previous posters but you have to try the helmet on to see what fits.
For me, Arai helmets fit much better than Bell helmets. I'll pay the extra for an Arai helmet anyday for the comfort that it gives me.

ive got an arai gp2k as i race karts, the k does stand for karting but it meets the same standard. the same with gp3,4 and 5
ive used the arai bike helmets as well in the past and they r prob just as or even more comfortable than the gp helmets and cheaper. mainly got the gp helmet on the hope that ill get a race car drive sometime soon..
