Helmet Suggestions

What is a good suggestion for Autox and track days? I don't ahve a roll cage and i don't plan on putting one in.

And no i will not pay 1000 USD for a SA2000 Arai Helmet

tims 03-05-03 03:42 PM

buy an SA2000 helmet and buy the one that fits you best. the higher price models will give you added features but they will give similair protection. I would also buy a full face helmet. check out my friends at Bell Motorsport/Pyrotect they have some inexpensive helmets. A teammate just bought a new Pyrotect helmet and I believe retail is around $300 looks good and is lightweight and fits perfect. look at some of their close out items for big savings and tell them the guys from RealRide Racing sent you.

no roll cage means no club racing so i guess it's only solo 2 autcrossing.

check ww.jegs.com they sell sa2000 helmets for $150. cars and competition isn't cheap but we gotta shop smart.

if you want to just put little money in investing in the helmet i suggest buying that one, and if you want a more fancy one with more features invest in that at a later time.

I've learned you never skimp on safety equipment, but you're completely right in not needing $1000 helmet. I think the team paid between $300-$400 for their helmets.

If you have a $50 head buy a $50 helmet. I just got a brand new Bell Sport 3. Very comfortable and affordable. Around $300.

I have an older Bell M2, works great for my big ole' head, and I have to wear glasses.

Buy SA2000, might as well get as long of life as you can out of the helmet, you'll have a good 10-15 years before it's illegal for most track/auto-x clubs. You could buy M2000 if it's just autox, but several track organizers require SA for their events, so if you think you might want to do that, get the SA2000.

I 100% agree on the 50/50 deal, but don't go overboard either. Try the helmets on is my best advice, my first helmet (Simpson Voyager) was like a skull cap, and I couldn't breathe (no real vent in the mouth area)

200-300 is about all I'd spend.

I got my Bieffe F1 SA2000 (it says made in 2002 dunno if that makes it SA2002? ) for around $200. I got it from www.tracksidesupply.com , the service was excelent and they had the lowest price for this helmet I could find online. They got it to me next day which was great because I needed it the day after that. Also I would recomend a composite helmet as its much lighter on your head.

Make sure you buy one at a place where you can try them on. Each helmet has a very different fit. for me a Bell sport II was perfect, I tried on alot of helmets, and only one or two fit my head correctly. Regards, Carl

Where can you do this? I'm asking because I'm sure you can't do this on the internet, and I think it is important to see how the helmet fits before you spend a nice amount of money on it. I'm also looking to get into auto-x (e stock) and I would prefer to have my own helmet because loaners stink... (literally)

Tyson, Thanks for the link... too bad you have to add 15% on top of 500 bucks.

I hate taxes

TYSON 03-07-03 02:46 PM

If you plan to attend any SOLO events, apparently CSC charges no taxes during the open house. SOLO Ontario Open House

Have anyone done a weight comparison between manufacturers?

I like the Simpson Super Bandit, but if the Bell M3 is noticeably lighter I would look at it.

SleepR1 03-07-03 06:14 PM

Bell M3. Simpson's for circle track racer's like Bill Simpson LOL :)

Rx7@Rocketship.com 03-08-03 06:12 PM

The BELL line of helmets really are very nice helmets, but... You HAVE to try different helmet brands on.

Years ago I really had my heart set on a BELL only to find out that a SIMPSON, which was less desireable to me, just plain fit my head better.

The right helmet is the one that fits.

i should get a custom made one molded to the exact shape as my head...

damn i want $$$

SearsPoint, winecounty motorsports...

They have the absolute best service, and the widest range of helmets, shoes and gloves...

Sparco, Stand21, OMP, AGV, Bell, Arai, all there..

I just bought a Arai GP5-K. I decided my head is worth about 600ish worth of protection...plus they throw in an extra visor for free...:)

I am going there again tmw, to watch the 360 Challenge races...:)

damn all you guys who live in USA. In canada there aren't any places... and we have to pay 15% ontop of retail for taxes... BAH!

Rx7@Rocketship.com 03-09-03 05:31 PM

Cheers,

Two ways of looking at this...

IF you NEED a SA2000 helmet, you'll have it for a loooong time. No use skimping on account ofa few bucks.

IF you DON't need an SA type helmet you can get some very nice helmets from a motorcycle shop.

If I were you, check Racerwholesale and check the GForce helmets they have there.... or like the post says up here, the Pyrotect helmet looks quite nice.

Cheers Cheers.
David
