Close Ratio Gearset interest

Hey guys,
I've got a gearset manufacturer that's interested in doing a gearset for the RX7 that's rated to 5-600 Ft-lbs. The gearset would be close ratio, or straight cut depending on you application or prefrence. Let me know if your interested since the initial run would have to be 20-30 sets. They are a quality manufacturer and I've used their products on high HP WRX's, Honda's and Nissans. The price of their current product line is substantially lower than the offerings by other manufacturers, and a dogbox would also be possible given enough interst. The best part is it's an american company. Not necessarily better than HKS or OS Geiken, but local is always cheaper than international.
This came out of me being tired of breaking syncro's as my projects have gotten higher and higher in horsepower, and frankly I'd rather know that my transmission isn't going to explode once I cross the 500 RWHP barrier. With the current pace of research and development in the US rotary community and turbo engines becoming more and more powerful as well and NA 20B's quickly heading toward 500HP and beyond. I think a cheaper or at least comperable alternative to a T56 swap or Supra transmision is in order. Please tell me your thoughts and what gear ratio's you all would like to see and I will get back to you, and do what I can do to set up a group buy if there is enough interest.

Thanks,
Chris

I cant give hard numbers yet because it would depend on the amount of interest, but their current offerings for honda, Subaru and Nissan run about 300-350 per gear so for now lets estimate 1500. but once I get a more solid feel for the demand I can let you know an exact price.

Sounds to good to be true, a close ratio dog gearset 1500USD, ready for install into the standard Fd gearbox to handle 5-600hp??? The casing is a weak link as well as the factory gearset @ 500+.

Do you intend strengthening the factory trans in some way ??? Will the main shaft bearings etc be upgraded also???
What ratios 1:1 5th or a 0.90 5th (overdrive for road race)

Cheers.

Close ratio helical or straight cut gears. Although a dog box would be possible. but probably closer to 4K. Still cheaper than the HKS trans though. Anyway, I'm waiting on some info so I can fill you guys in further. Hopefully tonight.

This has already been done by houseman autosport in canada. I bought it and it consisted of straight cut close ratio gears with either dog rings or syncro rings with a beefed up shaft. The craftsmanship was good but...The weak link is still the stock casing and the stock shift linkage which , while better than stock, was still inferior to a jerico or hewland. I'd still miss third geat once in a while.

You know what they say, just do it right the first time.

I would just get a jerico or a t56. Actually i did get a jerico.

Quaife also has a couple of gear cluster sets that are designed for the FC and FD gearcases. Both in dog boxes and synchro versions. I can't speak for the case rigidity issue, but I can tell you that they are as tough as can be.

My WC Cougar has a talent for chewing up gearboxes. It will eat up a stock gearbox in under 20 minutes, the Houseman box lasted just under an hour, the Liberty box was about an hour as well. The Quaife dog box will last until you burn the dogs off it then you need to replace the individual worn gears and rebuild it. This usually lasts about 3 years of hard racing. Granted I am only making 310 hp with 255 lb/ft of torque, but it is in an FWD setup with a stock case and a 3 plate Quartermaster clutch. Pretty abusive setup. Take a look at the Quaife units as quite often the weak link is the input shaft splines.

It sounds like $5000. No reason to keep the stock architecture at that point. Design something that uses gears that are already out there like for a Hewland. Taylor has the old Elite box that is just that. Can't say I can recommend it though.

The Borg-Warner T5 is already at that point (and I have a good feeling that I know who this manufacturer is ) but the problem is, it's a T5 and not a very good trans.

Just checked out Housemans site, it says racing ratio syncro gear sets start at $2995 USD.

What do the RX8 race cars use? It is the same bolt pattern on the bell housing IIRC.

Fixed that for you. The 5.12 R&P available from MazdaSpeed is 1495 bucks.

Also, the case is the issue. Billet case might be the answer, but at that point why not just a Quaife Rocket box/Saenz 5 or 6 speed etc.? HKS did (maybe does?) make a 6-speed sequential, but its pricey.

Honestly its going to be hard to make a strong enough 5 or 6 speed manual box that will hold that power for less than an existing box. There are even existing bellhousings to mate them to the 13B etc as well.

We use the STOCK 09/10 6-speed. Its a marked improvement over the 04-08 version, but still not that strong. In fact, the one in the current car needs rebuilding and will be swapped out and rebuilt before St Pete.

Pretty sure the 20B cars are using some sort of racing sequential box that has absolutely nothing more in common with the Mazda boxes beyond being a transmission.

There is an upgrade kit for the 2010's, hardened this and that. And the Grand Am GT 20b's run Daytona Prototype gearboxes believe it or not.

Day-amn. Mazdatrix sells short-nose 5.12s for half that, and FC-nose 7" for $1300, both of which are still "suck wind 'til your meatballs bounce" expensive but cheaper than Mazdaspeed.

You mention Saenz but HKS is pricey? I thought Saenz boxes were in the $15-20k range.

Last time I bought a Saenz it was about half the price of a Wiesman or similar, so not that bad.
