Can the rotary FD be a reliable track car?

That's not really a rotary issue at all. Race cars don't like oil starvation. How many Gs are you pulling? You might need some additional baffles or other aftermarket solution.
The upside is that if it's just bearings, rebuilding the engine shouldn't be all that hard or expensive (I would think).

This was clearly a bad idea. You should have addressed the blow by properly.

What is the routing of your catch can? Are you on Ethanol? As mentioned above, you could look at a baffled oil pan. What was your oil temp and pressure?
