I love this car man. Great job on the fab work. Truly and inspiration to us all. how much power did she make on the dyno?

Thanks guys for the kind words, sorry no numbers yet, remember I used the dyno for breakin purposes. I'll have numbers once I go to the chassis dyno. Plus the surrounding neighbors called the cops twice on us, so time was cut short. You can only imagine how loud this thing was

OMG, that is too funny! Finally a LEGITIMATE reason for having the cops show up!!! [OFFICER] "Sorry Big Al, but you'll have to shut 'er down... but give me a couple more cracks of the throttle before you do that."

Just tell the police that you were watching NASCAR is HD and felt the need to TURN 'ER UP!!

you're actually pretty close to what actually happened. Cop "what the hell are you guys doing here?" BigAl "we're running an engine on a dyno" Cop "what kinda engine?" BigAl... "a rotary" Cop "a what?" BigAl... "one of those new engines, you know" Cop "oh yeah". then the next cop went similar but we felt bad for the neighbors and stopped.

It's not a rotary dyno party until the cops are called... lol

Well it's been a while since my last post, rest assured I've been working really hard on the race car, below is a few shots of some of the latest stuff I've done.

Here you can see I've added a flange to the header heat shield where I'll be bringing in air from a NACA duct that will be installed on the front bumper.

After

So I decided to redo my wing mounts. In case you don't remember my wing mounts, this is what they used to look like which would have worked fine but I really like the new mounts!

heres the latest version (gotta keep up to date)

here's what I did for all of the air bleeds from the coolant system, I decided to put all of them in a central location.

^are all those bleeds just located to high points in your cooling system? that way you don't have to worry about air bubbles at all? or am I completely wrong? Keep it up!!! rad stuff as always!

you got it, they are at least 3-4 inches above the highest vent.

Man, I love this thread! Quick question: Why route air to the header area? Will this lower underhood temps?

just to help the heat shield a bit, as you can imagine the headers are going to get a bit warm

thanks for the kind words

Here you can see the tiny Naca Duct that feeds the header heat shield

here is the battery tray, hold down and cover I made. The top is black Starboard, it's a pretty tuff plastic that's not as brittle as plexi.

the bottom tray and uprights are made of steel. The battery is a braille 3121, they make smaller batteries but I felt this model was a perfect mix of weight and reserve power.

I love the new wing mount. The wing is more in free air now. Less drag on the underside. Bravo!

Love the beautifuil fab work.

Question: why did you hang/suspend the rear wing into Tension, rather than support into Compression?

>>Question: why did you hang/suspend the rear wing into Tension, rather than support into Compression?

I will toss in my answer based on very limited knowledge of this and this may not be exaclty right but close :-)

the smooth airflow over the bottom is more impotant that the airflow over the top in producing the downforce, thus if you move the mounting obstructions to the top of the wing, you keep the bottom surface smooth, improving its downforce function.

its is less 'bad' if the air going over the top of the wing gets 'spoiled' versus the bottom of the wing

remember this is really an inverse wing, so if we were talking about an airplane, we switch what we are calling top and bottom here.

I would bet this is one of the reasons you things like missle and fuel mounts on the bottom of airplane wings, disrupt the air on the top of the wing = very bad for lift, disrupt the air in the bottom of the wing, not as bad for lift

Ok, no we need a smart guy to correct that mess I just made above :-)

Yep, Bernoulli was proven wrong quite some time ago with regards to lift. On an aircraft the lift comes from the air flowing over the top of the wing and the Coanda effect. (the pricinple by wich air flowing over a surface will want to 'stick to' that surface. Once the air reaches the trailing edge it basically creates lift by shooting downward.

So on racecar downforce aero most of the work is done by the bottom side of the wing. While you are not gaining all that much by this mounting method, you do get some.

hey chad,

'Yep, Bernoulli was proven wrong quite some time ago with regards to lift'

its funny yo mentioned that as I just read an article on this:
How Airplanes Fly

was very interesting to learn the actual deatails in how the wing produces lift, and how the Bernoulli effect is not the full picture.

may bad for thread hijacking!!! ok back to BigAl's cool car build stuff....did you see that sexy battery tray!! :-)
