Anyone interested in getting a group together for a track weekend? VIR? Road Atlanta?

Hey Pat,
Fingers crossed, the trans issues seem to be worked out. The replacement had 1st/2nd gears over torqued and pilot bearing misinstalled. Seems to be cool now. Car is basically identical to how it was 2 years ago. I think I need some @#$% Motons and pro coaching!

I'd love some track data equipment but I can barely handle my old sony video recorder.
Definitely don't want issues in t10 that's like the bermuda triangle

Too bad you don't have that info on a data logging system layered on the video. I've stopped watching video bc there isn't sufficient info there. You know over the weekend, since there was so much traffic, I was messing around and running over curbing at 5a and 9 (first right of the esses). I was trying this at slower speeds. I think my Motons allow me to do this, but I could be wrong if I was at speed. I know the racers straight line the lower half of the esses. I've seen car get some air at the curbing at 9.
Left foot braking at T10...funny....I'm not messing around with that turn. That's the reason I leave it in 4th when I really should be in fifth ( so that I'm not unnecessarily taxing the engine). If you miss the down shift there it means you go off side ways...not good.
I definitely need to work on keeping the car at 80 mph between 16 and 17. I'm losing a full second there per my Traqmate comparison with another GT3 doing 2:08s.

Thanks for the props on the vid, my old *** still has a little something left in the tank hehe.
Hopefully I'll make the chin event if I can get student to sign up and request me.

Fellas, I've booked an upper Villa and Ram's booked a lower villa for Chin. Ramon and I will be splitting time w/ Greg from 3G motorsports helping sort out our Moton dampers and some right seat pro coaching.
Fritz, the GT3 can't do left foot braking. All newer cars cut the throttle when the brake is applied. Except for that fan dangled Prius...
Pete, nice video. Car sounds and looks like it has a bunch of grip. Saw Mitch a couple weeks ago and he said you're still having trans issues?
Nice video old timer (yea, that's you Flynn) looking forward to seeing you at Chin. Hopefully, my car will break under the 2:10 mark. I'm not really optimistic due to how hot it typically is in July, but Ramon you should easily see those times.
Ramon, Sorry to hear about the Fikse. I had the same issue w/ a Kinesis wheel last year and they ended up getting tossed. I saved the barrels and lips, but the centers were junk. The quality control of the Fikses went downhill the past couple of years. I hope Kodiac can fix that, but I'm done with them and the smaller wheel companies. The next set of wheels will be BBS Motorsport wheels.

I wonder what kind of times I could run in my old FD w/ the single turbo these days?

Pat, Greg at 3G is being a little flakey again. I sent emails to him and Hank and called Greg on his cell # to setup the Chin event. I wanted to know what pre-set up I could get done BEFORE arriving at VIR. I really can't drive to Greensboro the day before.

Ramon, I also haven't heard from him. I'll give him until the end of the week to confirm or I'm just going to bag Greg and work with Geoff from ASG here in Fairfax Va. He's a little more expensive, but he does most of my wrenching on the car.
I think about building another FD but don't give it much thought after spending some time here. I have 120+ track days on the Porsche and I've had to replace brakes and oil. I spend most of my time at the track on the clean side on the car. If I replace the 993 it will be with a 997 GT3 or a 993 Cup.

That's like 12k plus track miles
One of these days I'll join you in the GT3

It will be five years in September. I have over 15k track miles... those Chin events I really rack up the mileage!
This past winter was a suspension overhaul- took out most of the old rubber. This upcoming winter will be a trans refresh with RS gearing and a LSD. Considering putting in a cage and going racing in 2011

Brent, mine has zero engine/drive train modifications. It's uber expensive to upgrade Porsche engines. I could bump up the displacement to a 3.8 and gain another 30hp for a cool 14k! Yeah, the price of another car. This winter I'm going to buy a Porsche RS gearbox. The US designated cars had really tall gears and make 2-3 really annoying. I've driven a 993 w/ a RS gearbox and it felt like it had another 60hp or so. However, it's not a cheap endeavor... $9800 for a new RS G50/30 gearbox w/ a Porsche Motorsport LSD.
I've spent most of my time/money on seat time and suspension. I've removed all the rubber and done spherical bushings, Moton Motorsport dampers, RS sway bars, and various other factory RS parts. It really is an awesome car on track and the brakes are phenomenal. I decided about a year ago that this quest for HP will never end and newer cars are just so blindly fast. I'm perfectly happy going out in my 993 and trying to be the fastest 993 on track.
It took me about 2 full seasons to fully adjust to the idiosyncrasies of the 911 from the 50/50 of the FD. In the end I think it's really helped my driving skills. Porsche's are great track cars, but very expensive if you're into modding your cars.

JEEZ, 120 track days on the 993 alone? I've got less than 50 total really (and that's stretching to include "days" where I was at the track but might've run one or zero sessions due to problems/weather) including my Skip Barber 3-day in 1991, and since I started tracking the RX7 in '99.
I need to get out more.

I've been saying that for years
I probably have 200 days in the last 10 years. However in the FD atleast 50 of those days were non driving lol.

In a nut shell the only reason I left the FD is because of my kids and my distance from VIR. I have no time to spare. Once the kids came around there would be no tinkering. This has been proven right. I don't even have time to sleep. Also, because of the reliability issues I didn't care for trailering my car 10 hrs just so I could blew my engine because of some crazy boost control problem. If I lived closer like Fritz it probably wouldn't have mattered much. Like Pat said, I only change oil and pads. That's it ! Thinking about this more I think the 3rd reason I left the FD was that there wasn't a good tuning and mechanical shop that raced the car. The different inputs you get from the shops on engine tuning or suspension setup is ridiculous. In the end I don't think many of them knew what they were doing. I was tired of being a beta test for them.
And, yes, driving a 911 platform is so different than the FD it's scary. The driving dynamics make you focus a lot more on what the car is telling you. Need to always be focused.
I only wished I did this earlier....
BUT, and this is a big BUT, if the engine goes its $25K to repair or $40K for a new one. Nothing is for free.....

I can totally see those considerations. Tracking an FD does have it's challenges, but (knock on wood) i've enjoyed remarkable reliability albiet for relatively infrequent dates for which I try to be well prepared—but I went 10 years of actually driving the car (with trailerette) to and from the track as far away as Watkins Glen without being stranded. Couple close calls though. And last May I finally trailered and the transmission blew!
I'll agree, that the biggest issue is lack of support. There are literally TONS of race-proven tweaks and setup advice for 911's, or 3 series BMWs, and relatively speaking the FD has had virtually NONE. No high dollar racing outfits really ever touched the car... shops like PFS and Pettit and M2 were relatively low buck almost privateer efforts in comparison.
You STILL can't get good advice on something as fundamental as coilovers/shocks, or aerodynamics/downforce, and while there's alot of info for street reliability, not alot has been put behind track specific reliability stuff, whereas that stuff has been engineered into 911 variants over time.
BUT, stuff for these cars is really relatively cheap when it does break.

Well my new wastegate diaphragm will be in my hands any day and I'll pop that baby in and hope for better luck at the BMW event but I'm not holding my breath
I may hang out an extra day to watch you guys drive with Chin
