This year was different in that there were only three runs in Red (and maybe Black too) on Sat/Sun, and that MASSIVE gap between the 1st/2nd. That wasn't great... used to be four :30's a day.

I'm going to run Chin for the first time at WGI in Sept 6-7, since they seem to have usurped Trackmasters for that date ahead of the vintage race the following weekend.

Thanks guys. Hope to run into at the track this year.

I would of let you drive it around the track, Fritz, had it not had the transmission issues.

Not that it matters since I didn't get to drive a full day anyways, but I was a little disappointed to see only 3 sessions a day for all groups this past weekend. I think that format takes it's toll on the student learning curve as well. The FSR PCA event last fall we were able to get a ton of track time I feel like. I really like the Chin events as well. They are a little more expensive, but it's worth it I think. Another group I've had alot of success with is MVP. They are pretty cheap and just as much track time as Chin. They always cap car entrants so it's never too crowded and the quality of driver's is just as good as Chin. I literally had to stop driving at their Road Atlanta event last November because I couldn't focus after doing 5-6 sessions a day. Not sure how many NE/MA events they do though.

Great suggestion Ramon. If we do it again, we will make sure we come up with a rally point for everyone to park for the weekend so we are all in the same location.

It was great meeting some new faces and catching up with some old ones. It kind of felt like an old Mazda Drivers event.

Brent - Glad you enjoyed the ride along. Sorry for getting us yelled at in the pits after my minor spin incident.

As for the run format, Friday was great. On Sat and Sun it was tough sitting there for several hours waiting to run. My next event will be with Chin in July and I'll go from there. There is no question I like the Chin format better. It does cost a little more but its well worth it once you get to the track. Besides, the real expense for me is setting up the car and getting to the track. The entrance fee is just a small part of the total expense.

Vir

It was great to see some FD's at the track. It was a pleasure meeting many of you folks for the first time. I was very impressed with everyone's driving skills. Since I was in the White run group I didn't get the opportunity to try and follow you guys on track but I did take opportunity to watch when possible.

Fritz...My neighbor in the room next to us at the Lodge timed you @ 2:09 on a couple of laps. Very fast, but he was doing his timing from the 3rd floor balcony...you were probably faster! Sorry about your issues @ the tech barn...what bullshit!

Brent...Thanks for pulling this together. It was a blast. My Lady was with me for her first track event and, as Bill said; "her first hit on the crack pipe"...lol. So true!
She drove her M Edition Miata well and was soloed her second day. She is still driving the course in her sleep...LMAO. I have created a monster.

Bill...Nice to put a face to a gent that has offered me good advise on many occasions! Had big fun running with you on track...you are smokin through the twisties.

2:12 lap posted to YouTube:

It's funny how slow and smooth it looks compared to my memory of it. Quality isn't good enough to read my speedo like on the HD original. I was up on time/speed the following lap, but was balked at Hog Pen by an M3. Sector times say there's a theoretical 2:10 (maybe a 2:09) in there.

Great VID and Damn that line is so familiar, seriously I feel like I'm watching one of my videos

As mentioned earlier you have a 2.10 just as the car sits no problem which would be a super QUICK lap in a TT FD, possibly the fastest I know of

A wing and the right coilovers will shave another 2 seconds.

Dave,
Sorry I didn't get a chance to hang some but as Ramon said we need to all gather closer together next time out.

Regarding your lady, as Pete often quotes "the racing jones makes a junkies problem feel like a craving for something salty" or something like that

Any good lap times I had were Friday and I doubt even those were that good, the older I get the more rust I have to knock off

Enjoyed the video as well. It's funny we all have the same line... we must of had a good teacher Peter, your car could be ran in TTA, which is a class below what Fritz and I run with a car that is just as fast. Do it... Do it!

Josh, don't worry about the yelling. There is alot of yelling that goes on in the Army.

Nice Video

Nice Video Peter...I run the same line best I can tell. I've been learning to enter 14 hotter, a little spooky for me but I'm gradually getting there.

Fritz...It was Friday when he was timing you. I was parked next to him in a comfy bar stool with a cold beer watchin you guys run. Next time we can bunch up a little better. And yes; she wants to go back...

What's the difference that let's my car into TTA vs. whichever you run (TTS? TTU?)?

I see the lap record at VIR full for TTA is 2:07.198 in a Z06... LONG way to go for that.

TTS is straight power to weight, which is where you go once you acquire to many points to fit into your TTA-TTF class. Modifications are unlimited for the most part. The FD is base classed TTC with a 14 point initial point penalty. I've crunched the numbers in the past and a twin turbo FD with the bolt on's should be able to make it into TTA. Chris(SPICcfmFD or close to that) use to run TTA with his twin turbo FD and did pretty well. The TTA C5 Z06's are basically stock as they have a very limited amount of points to play with. Last year the fast guys in NASA-SE ran A6 tires and T1 sway bars. This year the A6's incur additional points, so now they run R6's in the same size or try to run 275 A6's(which is hard to do in Vette). Anyways, that's enough rambling for now. I'll say that NASA in general is starting to tighten their shot group in regards to TT so some of the guys who have been cheating are getting caught and DQ'd. When I was there in Feb. of this year, they were sending people to the scales and dyno fairly regularly. Time Trial Rule Book is here:

Finally spent some time with the Traqmate. As Brent will tell you I have no idea how to work the device. In any case, I found a 2:10 and theoretical best lap of 2:09. Interestingly enough this was all on Friday when I was complaining about lack of grip and before I changed my swaybar settings twice that weekend. I can see a 2:08 coming very easily as I didn't really start to improve on hogs pen (where I'm losing sometime) until my conversation with Fritz. Meanwhile much of the credit goes to Josh because it certainly helps to be chasing someone or being chased on the track, otherwise it's easy to just cruise around the track.

I also discovered that I cracked my fikse rim in 7 different spots (spokes) in the left rear. Could have been disasterous.

Well, hope to see some of you at the Chin event in July.

NICE times, Ramon. Yes, I remember the Hog Pen "Big ol' tasty snack" line discussion.

How the heck did you crack Fikse wheels like that?!

Excellent lap times Ramon

Apparently the chin instructor quota is filling quick but there's still a chance I can get in If there's a novice student who will request me as their instructor. So here's a shout out to a novice driver to come to one of the best tracks in the country and drive with Chin Motorsports July 5th and 6th and get tons of track time http://www.chinmotorsports.com/

Awesome time Ramon!!! I'm right there with you dude! I'm lost like last years easter egg with my traqmate. I did get data this weekend though. Luckily, Traqmate is based out of basically Atlanta, GA and they have reps at most of the NASA-SE events so I'm going to pick their brains at the Road Atlanta event in June.

Just to add to that... Fritz has 10's of thousands of laps at VIR in an FD. If you want to learn VIR in an FD and learn it well, you aren't going to find a better instructor.

Apparently, based on discussion on Rennlist, there maybe a design flaw in the profile 13s. Also, these particular rims have had at least two owners and they both were running low 2 min times at VIR. That may or may not matter but they have been used hard. I alreay replaced an inner half on another rim. I guess I'm glad they are 3 piece wheels. If if keeps on happening I may go back to CCWs.

I'm sure the L rear is loaded up big time on a GT3 but that should never happen and I'd think Fikse would replace it free of charge.

Scarey stuff and thanks goodness it didn't break appart somewhere on track

Fritz should just buy one of the villas for his second home....

Ok, time to pick your brain. We talked about South bend being a 95 mph turn, Oak tree a high 40's turn and then I think you said 60 mph for top of roller coaster. Entry into esses is about a 125 - 130 mph target right? I know I'm babying it through south bend at a high 80's number and I'm good on the others except for the top of roller coaster. Is that sharp right hander really 60 mph? Do the other numbers sound right? I'm asking in terms of a 2:06 - 2:08 lap time.

The 2.08 and below lap recipe

t1 I brake at the 4 or so at 150 you can probably brake a little later. Nice staight brake very deep/late apex entering at 50 and try for 100 before braking for t3, try for 80 before braking/lifting for t6a. I either L foot brake 6a or lift and rotate. In the video below I actually L foot the 1st lap and llift the second. T10 and T16 (I tap them again just before 17) are also good turns for L foot braking.

Once you're at the N course entry you should be at 130 to 140 and I then lift for the esses entry moving left and back right and entering at 120+ or so and maintaining until tracking mid track before t10 (i'm at 125 to 130 at that point) moving back R for t10 L foot brake lighty down to 100 or so and seeing 90 to 95 at the t10 apex and 100 at track out.

oak tree start turning at 50 slide to 40 and exit at 70 at the bottom of the hill I'm at 155. I brake right at the bottom at 155 but you can brake a little later and will probably be going faster. Cup cars brake going up the hill at 170+

T14 enter at 60 slide/rotate to 50 then floor it to about 100 before braking for t16

t16 enter at 80 and maintain it and you should be at 100 plus at the t17 track out at the end of the gators

video link below is a decent example of MPH etc....although it may be hard to see the speedo. That's a 2.07 lap w/ a terrible trans that I couldn't get into 5th which cost some time. After the trans was removed the gear was pulled and 1/2 the teeth were gone I think with good conditions the car has a 2.05 in it even with this current engine that's not making much power.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8bHseT5g4SI

PS I'm running 275 40 17s which are about 1 inch taller than stockers so the speed is off a little.

Now THAT was a good weekend for Almost Racing! Speaking of which, did you ever send your contingency form in to claim your FREE tires?

Too bad you don't have that info on a data logging system layered on the video. I've stopped watching video bc there isn't sufficient info there. You know over the weekend, since there was so much traffic, I was messing around and running over curbing at 5a and 9 (first right of the esses). I was trying this at slower speeds. I think my Motons allow me to do this, but I could be wrong if I was at speed. I know the racers straight line the lower half of the esses. I've seen car get some air at the curbing at 9.

Left foot braking at T10...funny....I'm not messing around with that turn. That's the reason I leave it in 4th when I really should be in fifth ( so that I'm not unnecessarily taxing the engine). If you miss the down shift there it means you go off side ways...not good.

I definitely need to work on keeping the car at 80 mph between 16 and 17. I'm losing a full second there per my Traqmate comparison with another GT3 doing 2:08s.

Fellas, I've booked an upper Villa and Ram's booked a lower villa for Chin. Ramon and I will be splitting time w/ Greg from 3G motorsports helping sort out our Moton dampers and some right seat pro coaching.

Fritz, the GT3 can't do left foot braking. All newer cars cut the throttle when the brake is applied. Except for that fan dangled Prius...

Pete, nice video. Car sounds and looks like it has a bunch of grip. Saw Mitch a couple weeks ago and he said you're still having trans issues?

Nice video old timer (yea, that's you Flynn) looking forward to seeing you at Chin. Hopefully, my car will break under the 2:10 mark. I'm not really optimistic due to how hot it typically is in July, but Ramon you should easily see those times.

Ramon, Sorry to hear about the Fikse. I had the same issue w/ a Kinesis wheel last year and they ended up getting tossed. I saved the barrels and lips, but the centers were junk. The quality control of the Fikses went downhill the past couple of years. I hope Kodiac can fix that, but I'm done with them and the smaller wheel companies. The next set of wheels will be BBS Motorsport wheels.

Quick Reply: Anyone interested in getting a group together for a track weekend? VIR? Road Atlanta?
