Anyone here rallycross or rally race?
I was just curious if anyone here rallycrossed or did anything with rallying. i want to get into it this summer and was looking for some tips (racing is much different when you're in dirt). thanks.

I want to, i missed the main forest pro rally again, school related. I know a guy who bought a Mazda 323GTX and is building it for clubrally.
Ive talked to a few people that are involved in SCCA stuff, some not rally realated, they all said, if you want to get into the motorsport, go to compitions, make friends, network, become a member, compete and learn not in that order. I just got my SCCA membership info in the mail today, if your under 21 you can sign up for $70 and you even get subscribed to some mag.

yeah, i'm on the soloII mailing list, and i plan on doing that as well this summer. it's much easier to get into rallycross, being nearly the same thing as autocross, except in dirt. there is actually alot of events in resaca, ga, but i just found out about them and well, they're really far and really early in the morning. i wouldn't drive out there unless i was racing.
the 323 gtx is well-suited car for rallycross, but unfortunately people seem to want way too much for them. i'd rather just buy a beat up old crx or bmw 3 series and beat the snot out of that. i've also been thinking about a n/a fc, but it basically comes down to whatever i can get for about 400-600 dollars when i can.

yeah my friends and I are really big into rally. Hopefully one of my friends and I will be able to attend rally school (can't remember of the name off-hand) within the next couple years. I guess living in Michigan and having an absolute plethora of quality dirt roads is a bonus. My good friends and I have been hitting the dirt since we got our lisences. Actually my friends at home are out ripping through some of the dirt roads right now......wish I was with them. We usually will go out with 2 cars and just have some fun. I'd describe what we do but worlds really wouldn't do it justice.
Their are a couple smaller circuit events being held around September in lower MI and one in PA and I wanna go watch those. I believe ProRally has an event in MI but its in the upper portions of the state if not the UP and I dont know a date for it.

Planning on rallycrossing this summer in Dayton. Will either use my GSL, or (ick) a FWD Chevy product. (Either a Cavalier or Celebrity are at my disposal, both are 2.8 automatic)

rallycross would be fun. if you plan on going out club rallying you better have a decent pocket book and a lot of spare parts as well as truck and trailer. 2 accredited schools i believe to get licensed. then all the safety equipment. its definitely a chunk of change just to get started.

ever been on a gravel road or dirt playing? same thing except you don't have to worry about those pesky ditches and trees. you find the edge of grip a lot faster. braking points will be a lot earlier and the throttle will require a lot of attention as you will be drifting some unless you are poking at 5 mph.

yeah, i recently beat the **** out of my neon when i went camping. that was fun, except for the potholes. alright, i'll just go out there and get a little sideways, nothing wrong with that!

is there anything i need to do to my car before i race it (i.e. cage/rollbar, underbody tray, etc.)? i want to do some preventative maintenance so it doesn't break TOO much.

It's a good enough excuse to lift your car an inch or two and put those big huge ugly rally mudflaps on.
And mount two - four big huge driving lights on the bumper or valence panel. Even though rallycrosses are usually done during the day... but it completes the look and they *are* useful if you like to bomb country roads at night.

Rally Cross was built for the street cars to compete. You really do not need anything special to compete. You could get yourself some spare wheels and rally tires. You should not need to raise the car to mount the rally tires. I once used rally tires on a lowered road race car as rain tires. All I needed to do was bend the lip on the front fenders under a bit.

how do you fine out about rallycross's in your area? It turns out that they happen 30min north of me at a skiresort during offseason, but i never find out about them untill i run across the results
i know scca post calanders of most events on there site, but i never seem to find rallycross stuff.

so, can i just get a set of small truck tires at a generic chain store (i.e. walmart, pep boys, etc.)? this is supposed to be an attempt at budget racing so i can't spend tons of money on tires. oh, one more thing, what is the lowest insurance i can have on a car to rallycross it? liability? do i need something specific to racing?

rallycross is autocross on a field. Really. You don't need anything special at all. Enough insurance to drive it there is probably enough insurance to use it there. Feel free to add that crap to your car, but they'res no point really.
some good mud/snow tires might help a little, but if it's your first time out, it doesn't matter, nothing will help you
