Yup, I suspect you talked to Matt (GilesR6). I have as well. Great guy. If I hadn't happened into the JRZ's, I might have gone that route. Matt's advice notwithstanding, I've heard from several reliable sources "don't put Penskes on a street car". You don't have that problem.

I'll hit you up once I finish my 4.5" to 3.5" brake duct solution. It's going to be sweet. I think I'm going to put RB rears on. I know that supposedly I need upgraded front pistons in my StopTechs for that, but then everybody says the FD is front-biased, so I'm thinking I can tune w/ compound. I've heard the PFC 06's are cool. 01 bite, with 97 longevity. Running DTC 60's in the rear.

If that doesn't work, I designed a StopTech rear setup using their new mini 4-piston caliper, but it wouldn't be cheap to produce, and would be tight to clear my BBS street wheels, so I'm trying off the shelf and good ducting first.

Brent,
I'm going to align my car in the coming weeks which will be my big off season upgrade. What have you come up with there?

I'm thinking your old calipers were having some issues w/ the calipers retracting so hopefully you won't see that kind of wear from the rear again. Typically I'll go through 2 or 3 sets of rear pads in a year and rotors every 2 years.

I can see the weight saving as a major plus with two piece but 120 is cheap and you don't have to worry about all the hardware, torquing etc.....

You can't go wrong with Penske or JRZ but I'll continue to run my Tein Super Rs because they kick *** and have proven to be durable as well

I'll have to pull the folder to see what I'm at currently. I know I'm at around -2.5 camber all around and have been really happy with that on hoosiers. I'm getting even wear all across the contact patch. It didn't feel as good on the V710's, but that could of just been because they are older.

I hope so, i even had the springs on the pads to pull them off of the rotors.

Yeah, I'm looking at doing it so hopefully I can just replace the rings at a price less than $120 each... as well as make them floating and reduce heat. We'll see... I'm just like you... I don't like to do more work than I have to.

I've been looking at the Koni's, Moton's, JRZ's, and Penske's. I should of jumped on the JRZ's when they popped up since they were local to me, but I wasn't about to try undercut Pete. Those Super R's have been going strong for a long time now! Like a fine wine... they only get better with time

Pete, I did talk to Matt. I remember you telling me about him a while back. I can't imagine you'd put any of the top tier shocks on a street car, but I don't think you drive your car on the street that much? Looking forward to seeing all of your modifications over the winter. I never had a cooling issue with the 99spec front bumper with the stock brake ducts. I currently don't have any ducts though on the yellow car.

You know, I think you'll be fine on the brakes. I ran the rears with no change and mine were fine. I'm also running the 99spec's now(and ran them on my silver car), which as you know, do the same thing as the RB's do. The racing beats seem to flop around and make noise according to the guys I've talked to with them. I don't remember exactly what it is that's moving around though. Peppy on the forum has them with stoptech's on the front. He might have some insight about them.

opps! Brian just told me he ran a best of 2:07.1 at VIR in October and his best time in the panoz was a 2:06.8. The panoz is getting a new, better engine right now. Be interesting to see what kind of times they run next year!

I'm sure those guys along with some others will be ready to run for the cup The competition in TTs is just starting to heat up. More and more people are realizing it's a great way to have fun at the track with a lot less risk of denting up your baby from a bone head move starting at the cockpit or elsewhere. From the little bit of racing I've done atleast 1/2 the field has very little experience and that's dangerous position to put yourself in although to some that's the whole point lol.

Well, year end wrap up for 2010:

My year started off on a high note doing a local track weekend in Jan. at NSS where myself and my dad drove. Had alot of fun

Feb: I drive to VIR through a good bit of snow(I have pictures some where). I finally make it in around 12-13 hours... normally it takes me 8-9. The first low of the year. As I'm cooking around VIR thinking to myself how good the car is feeling, I blow the engine in my silver car on Friday. I still stick around to instruct on Saturday and Sunday, but wasn't alot of fun. It did make me push all the more to finish the yellow car.

March: After a really hard push from Chadwick and Brian, we get the yellow car what I think is "done" enough to get on track. Once again, at NSS, which is 15 minutes from the shop just in case we run into issues. The car does ok, but has a grinding transmission and I blow a head gasket on the second day.

April-August: I spent this time chasing issues on the car. What I found, the previous owner never installed a pilot bearing(engine and transmission were bolted together when I received them) as well as installed the incorrect clutch master cylinder size. I also found the old composite headgaskets. In retrospect, I'm glad the head gasket did blow. I replaced the head gasket with MLS ones which isn't a big deal. What I found though was hardened push rods were never installed with my guide based roller rockers. I also found that the stock valve springs were never replaced when a new cam was installed. The best I can tell, the engine was rebuilt by someone who knew what they were doing and given back in short block form. The previous owner prob. put it back from short block to long block in a hurry and missed a few "key" things. I can't really complain for what I got the car from. Plus, aside from the diff, I'm been through everything in the car. I ended up attending several events during this time and instructing only.

I also have several transmission debacles with numberous ppl. All I wanted was a T56 that worked. Charlie at Mazcare was able to find one and install it for me due to me being extremely busy with work.

Sept: This brings us up to September. The car is now ripping, but is yet to be track proven. I hit up the BMW CCA event at Road Atlanta. The car works flawlessly. It feels like we've weathered the storm and the worst is behind us. Still more work to do on the car(like the brakes), but I'm going to enjoy it the rest of the year.

October: I make another journey to the track mecca to see my fellow track rat, Fritz Flynn. Some of my southeast friends came up as well. I encounter a few issues on Friday and end up going off track twice. It turns out my tires were done and the tire guys weren't going to be there to mount my other ones until that evening. Saturday and Sunday go great! Fritz and I both run time trials. I set a new personal best of 2:06.9 and Fritz sets a new personal best for his red car of 2:05.3. We also had a really good time hanging out at the track. Seriously one of the best track weekends to date for me.

November: I drive CMP for really the first time the first week of November. I end up placing 3rd on Saturday, and 2nd on Sunday. I'm happy with that. I also run MVP's event at Road Atlanta and have a really good weekend. It was a good time to get a little practice before the end of the year event at Road Atlanta.

December: The huge end of year NASA-SE event... where records are shattered most of the time. I normally hang out with the GA-RX8 club and our group has grown and continues to grow. For the event, we had prob. 30 cars in the group and 2 motorhome/RV's to hang out in thanks to a couple of the members! It was pretty cold so it was nice to have around for sure. One of the members cooked all weekend. Really really good food. Great weekend on track as well! I set a new personal best at Road Atlanta of 1:35.2 with some traffic. Traqmate shows without traffic I would of ran a 1:33.9 and a theoretical best lap of 1:33.1. I ended up placing 2nd both days.

Overall, another good year! See everyone next year or the year after!

Early in the year you made your sacrifices to the track gods and they gave back at the end two fold

It's been a great ride and can't wait to see where the road leads from here

Keep your head down and return safe and sound because "almost racing" won't be the same w/o you going round and round at a track somewhere on US ground

Sounds like a great season. Glad to see you have lots of seat time. Very jealous. So, you guys have piqued my interest. I briefly reviewed the Nasa tt rules. Seems like there are 2 classes but with lots of adustments for weight/hp ratios? So, for giggles where does a 3000 lbs 996 gtw (w/o driver) fit in this? To be semi competitive what times are needed at VIR ? TT seems like the better route than racing...as Fritz put it. At least it makes sense for me.

Brent, need to still find time to look at the traqmate data you sent. I do recall your call pulling me hard on the backstraight.

Happy Holidays to all.

Will do Fritz! I think I mentioned before but there is a small chance that I might be able to make VIR with NASA at the end of March. I won't know until the start of March, but keep that in the back of your mind.

Ramon- Assuming 200lbs for you and all your gear(just putting a number out there), if your car is 367rwhp or less, you would be in TTS. If it has more than 367, you will be in TTU.

I don't think I had a working car the weekend we were at the track? Maybe thinking of Pete's?

Ramon,
You should be in TTA if you keep the stock wing on there. You'll probably need a 2.06 or lower to win and nothing above a 2.08 to place. You can look the rules up on the NASA website.

Brent,
The wife is going under the knife Jan 10 to have the hardware removed but I/she should be ok by March

I was talking about the traqmate data. You sent me the log. I was comparing my 2.09 with your 2.06.

Will read more about Nasa over the holidays. Need to justify the 11 hr travel though. Not sure how much track time I would get.

I would do it just for fun--sort of. But with R6's a 2.07 - 2.08 will be reached next year.

Ok I read up more on this before I ask dumb questions.

Everybody else is running A6s so you may as well do it too. I will have to start using them to be competitive and from what I understand they last about as long anyway.

Finally went through my video from WGI in September in detail. When I go through, I usually FF through any laps with traffic, and my best clean laps were 2:13's. However, I found my new best time... a 2:11.xx., on a traffic lap.

It also, embarrassingly enough, came on the final lap of a black-flagged session. You'll see me drive blissfully by, count them, TWO flag stations on the way to FTD.

You're fast. I ran a 2:16 on Z1 Star Specs. Gotta get back out there on my A6s

^^

I ran 2:16 on old school khumo victoracers a few years ago. Very few mods since. This time was on first-day Hooser R6's. I'd sure like to try it out with that big-@$$ wing you've got :-)
