Unhappy Well, the PFC is in but the 7 won't start... Maybe voltage issue, help please?

Hey all,

I just finished installing the PFC but I can't get the car to fire. It cranks fine, but won't fire. I think there might be an issue with some of the voltages. In the Sensor/SW Check menu, I am getting voltages of:

PIM 0.03v
VTA1 0.01v
VTA2 0.01v
VMOP 0.00v

Those ones are highlighted in a dark box as well. They stay the same during cranking also.

I noticed that when I try to start, the FPD switch dot will fill in, so maybe that shows that my fuel pump is indeed working to try to start. Do these extremely low voltages have something to do with my problem? Is it possible that I have a grounding issue somewhere?

The car ran fine last night when I went cruising. What could possibly be causing my starting problem?

Thanks guys, this is pretty depressing.

EDIT: The Exhaust Temp Warning Indicator is on.

First did you have the battery disconnected before switch ECUs?

Second, depending on where you got your PFC, did you cut the three pins or wires per instructions?

Do a search here for install instructions.

Yes, the battery was disconnected during the switch.

Yes, I cut the 4 wires according to the pin diagram and writeups on here, and the ends are secured with electrical tape.

I ordered the PFC brand new from the RX7STORE yesterday, and it arrived today.

I followed the instructions and writeups on here letter for letter. I'm very paranoid when working on my 7.

All of my friends and I have installed our PFCs here in Houston and never had any problems. That is at leaste 8 that I personally know of.

I suggest you double check everything you did. Either the PFC is bad or you are bad.

I double, triple, and quadrouple checked every step before I did it. Especially when it came to cutting the wires. Heres what I did --

- Removed the plastic kick-panel
- Unplugged the negative terminal to the battery - the car was then powerless
- Unscrewed the harness with the ecu on it, then unplugged the ecu.
- Carefully made sure that each wire I cut was the right one, then cut them and taped them one at a time.
- Plugged in the PFC and mounted it, reconnected the ground wires to screws from the lower part of the harness
- Reconnected the battery
- All electric functions of the car came back on successfully with the PFC in place
- Tried starting, cranked but no fire, saw the indicated low voltages on the menu

I don't believe I missed anything or screwed anything up on the install. So you think the unit itself might be bad?

Thanks for the replies.

Well, get this. I reconnected the cut wires, and now it works just fine! Voltages read normal, started up and went to about 1800 rpm, warmed up and dropped to below 1000. I guess I will see what happenes from here, I'll just proceed like normal.

Now I wish I never cut those wires...
Wish me luck!

Did you maybe cut the wires looking at the harness the wrong way???
Do you have a jap spec 7 and motor? I have "heard" those wires are connected on the newer j-spec rx7, but I don't know for sure.

No, I'm sure that I cut the proper wires. I went by the pinout, not colors. The wires I cut matched the pinouts in the instructions diagram EXACTLY. It's not a J-spec car.

I do have a Prolock installed that came with the car. You know, one of those anti-theft devices that requires a chip to be in a slot for the car to turn over. That's the only addition to the wiring scheme that I know of, but I don't know why that would affect anything (if it even did to begin with).

At any rate, the PFC is running the car PERFECTLY! I expected rougher operation since the wires are all connected now, but it's like a whole new car. VERY smooth, no 3000 rpm hesitation, super-smooth idle, faster turbo spooling, even the A/C works on all settings! I guess I didn't even need to cut the wires. I just wanted to do it "right" the first time. I should have tried it w/o cutting them first.

Man I got lucky, glad it worked out in the end...
