USB Datalogit Setup
i recently decided it was time to retire my 2000 Gateway laptop in favor of a much higher hp, faster sampling replacement.
great concept, often a struggle to set up.
the Datalogit uses earlier communications hardware in the form of a 9 pin Serial Port. so you buy a Serial Port to USB adapter. and the fun begins.
after a search you find lots of threads where members conclude they bought the wrong adapter and buy something else and eventually get it to work. if you read enough of the threads you will find that nearly all of the various adapters have been made to work.
i bought mine from Radio Shack. it came w an installation CD. after much screwing around i called a local computer shop and drove the car over to the shop ystda.
20 minutes later all was working which confirmed my suspicion that most of the systems we buy will work if properly fixtured into our computers...
(that's just a guess on my part. i claim no special knowledge.)
the problem i was having dealt w Vista (Home). even though it is my personal computer and i am the "administrator" that's not quite how it works. there are lots of things that the "administrator" is not allowed to do versus XP.
my computer guy was able to get around this by going to "Properties" in FCEdit and selecting it to be run like XP... or something like that.
bottom line is i was delighted to pay him for a half hour of his time instead of ordering some other brand of adapter and finding i had the same problem.
so if you are having problems i suggest you run it by a pro. 'just my 2 cents.

Some times you win and sometimes you lose.
That is why years ago I bought a rebuilt laptop with 98SE on it, installed XP, removed/turned-off all unnecessary software/services and made it a tuning only laptop. Even at a 700 mhz slow rate, it records quit fast.

I used to run a 90s laptop with an oldschool serial port, but the hardware was just too slow for maximum logging rates. I switched to a newer laptop (2004) that I got for cheap. I am using the IOgear USB-Serial converter that Chuck recommends. I now have Windows 7 installed on that laptop but I have had Vista on other machines. If permissions are a problem, try turning off User Account Control. It may be a little buried in the control panel. Turn all the warnings off. You may also have to go into some of the other security programs or settings you have running.
It can be made to work. I actually run basically zero firewall or constant "virus/spyware shield" security software on any of my personal computers. I have disabled realtime protection although I do occasionally do some scans.

Maybe you guys can help me out with this issue I am having...
I had been using FC-Edit for years with an old Sony VIAO laptop with built in serial connection without issues. Well that laptop eventually died so I decided to go out and purchase a dedicated netbook which would only be used for tuning and would be kept in the car. I made sure to purchase a netbook that came with Windows XP as I was not sure if FC-Edit would play nice with Vista or Windows 7.
I purchased the Radioshack serial-USB adapter and installed all the drivers. I also made sure all my com ports were setup correctly and everything matches.
The problem I am having is that FC-Edit does not recognize when the datalogit is connected and the car is powered on (on the first try). It will eventually recognize it, but it takes multiple attempts of cycling power to the ignition and opening/closing FC-Edit.
Windows immediately recognizes that an external hardware is connected when I plug in the adapter, yet I still get the interface not responding pop-up when I open up FC-Edit...
Could this be an issue with my Serial/USB adapter? or is there a setting somewhere that I need to change?

If it does periodically recognize the port, then it might be a speed differential problem.
The two port types are not syncing.
That is why I recommend the IOgear USB-Serial converter, it has a built in buffer. It has never failed on any computer unlike others!

on my pc the serial connector is assigned a different com port number depending on which USB port I plug into... might be same issue? I always plug into the same usb port to avoid this problem, or go into control panel > system > HArdware > device manger and check which port number is assigned and manually select it in the fc edit software..
