PowerFC series 8, fan control

Hi All,

I'm pretty new here, usually hang out over at FDRX7.com due to it being mostly a Aussie site.

I am posting because I have purchased a PowerFC for my series 8, 2000 model.

The PowerFC has the FD3S6 on the label so it should be the right version for my car. I have plugged it in and the car starts and drives fine, I haven't boosted it though. I am having one issue though, the thermo fans don't kick in. I have had it to a workshop to try and tune it but they said there is something wrong with the PowerFC and couldn't get the fans to kick in at all. They reset the PowerFC as it is second had to erase the old tune but no difference.

I am not so sure the PowerFC is stuffed. If it was the wrong version surely the car wouldn't run, or even be able to connect it up to the ECU plugs?

Has anyone else experienced this issue?

I don't have the datalogit software but I can take it back to the workshop, they are very helpful and wouldn't charge to have another look.

Thanks in advance,

Isaac

What you want to do is check and see if the "ELD" indicator comes on. ELD stands for Electrical Load Detection computer.

You can log this activity with the Datalogit, but if you don't have on you can go to etc --> sensors/switches on the PFC Commander. Turn all accessories off. The ELD indicator should come on at the target fan temperature (set in the Datalogit software), or at least that's how it works on the PFC for 92-95 models. If the ELD indicator is ON but no fans come on, you should start checking your fan relays, ECU output, etc. I don't know if Mazda changed the basic fan control system for the 99's or not. The fans should come on at 105C at the highest. That's the trigger temperature on the stock ECU for the 93-95. So let it idle until water temperature hits 105C (under the monitor screen in the PFC).

Another possibility is that your coolant temperature sensor for the ECU is bad in the sense that it is reading inaccurately due to age or is not plugged in correctly. It's possible to swap the fuel and water temperature sensor connectors on the 93-95 cars, but I'm not sure about the 99's. I've never even seen a '99 FD in real life.

If you can post your map and a Datalogit warmup log showing the data categories "Basic" and "Sensors" it will be much easier to narrow this down.

Thanks for the reply arghx.

You have given me some good things to look at.

I will connect up the PowerFC next week when I am on holidays and follow the steps you have outlined below to check.

I don't think there is a issue with the fan relays as they work perfectly with the stock ECU, don't have any overheating issues etc.

Sounds like it might be worth me getting the Datalogit software to have a bit more of a in depth tinker.

I have done a warm up of the car with the PowerFC connected.

Looking at the Sensor/Sw check when the thermo's normally kick in the ELD lights up on the handset but the thermofans don't kick in.

Looks like the next step is to connect a laptop up with the DataLogit software and try and adjust the fans???
