Power FC Myth Buster on Power FC
Myth Buster on Power FC
So I just had my Power FC installed and I was told not to ever jump start the car now that I have it. Something about erasing the map and/or ruining the computer. Is this true?
I ask because I have a wiring issue with my turbo timer and sometimes when the timer goes off the fans won't and it drains my battery. I've be trying to find the problem, but with little success, but since its only happens 3-4 times a year I haven't been worring about it to much.
Thanks for anyones two cents

There is some truth to what you've heard. You need to be careful with any car when using the start boost function of most of the smaller battery chargers. The starter can pull a huge amount of amperage and if it's pulling more than the battery charger can shove through it's inverter it's possible for the inverter to give in and allow 110V AC through to the car. In this case the ECU can be damaged. Though I've never had it happen personally (I use a commercial type charger rated to 200 amps) I have heard from others of ECUs being damaged.
Jumping from another running car or something like a boost box should be entirely OK.

i have jumped my car several times and its been good....surprised that lil battery still hold up...gotta love the dry cell batteries!! umm as far as your fans staying on....if your car is at a certain temp when u turn it off and take the key out the fans will remain on to cool the engine down to a specific temp and then the fans will turn off...is your car still pretty much stock??

This is kinda unrelated, but I am a Kohler engine dealer and we had some problems with frying computers on the fuel injected engines. This would happen when the customer would jump start the engine. It was fine as long as the cables were still attached, but when you unhooked the cables the current draw would spike and fry the injector circuit. Kohler now recommends not to jump start but if you do, leave the jumper cables connected until the engine is turned off. Kohler uses a modified Bosch unit from a Fiat.
