Power FC Learn to map myself (UK based)
Learn to map myself (UK based)
Hi there,
Looking for some advice from here in the UK.
I have a single turbo'd FD (Garret GT35/40) running V-mount intercooler, 550cc primaries and 1680cc secondaries (KG Parts), an Apexi BNR33 fuel pump and obviously an Apexi Power FC (and commander).
Before christmas I had 1200cc secondary injectors (bored out standard secondaries), but it blew on boxing day. So I have upgraded to 1680s for that extra bit of fuel. So, she has a good map on her for those 1200s. However, obviously she needs the fuel map adjusting for the larger injectors and new fuel pressure regulator.
My usual mapper has decided he doesn't want to do it any longer, and therefore I have 2 choices: go to a well known mapper who will charge a lot of money for each time I want to get it mapped (Do I need more than 1 session?) or buy a datalogit kit and wideband and learn how to do it myself.
How easy/difficult is it to do? Should I just save myself the hastle and get it done by a pro? Can anyone give me some advice!?
Cheers,
Nik

Hia man,
afaik, to map your own car, you need a datalogit, a wideband, pfc and laptop.
before all that, buy chucks tuning notes, they help no end and give an insight into whats involed. The notes in the sticky in the single turbo section help too.
The cost for everything is about the cost of a single tune session, but obviously can be used over again.
Trying to understand more myself! Im a pfc noob also lol :p Really want to learn more before I tweak things.

Who, or what, is Chuck? And where do I buy them from?
Jon is refering to me as he is one of my subscribers.
Since your car was previously totally tuned, the only changes will be any fuel adjustments due to the new injectors. If they are properly set up in the PFC with the DL, the fuel should not be too far off. The change will not affect idle and cruise.
But for safety, I would add 5% more fuel to the DL Settings 3 INJ Adjust Table for
map voltages 3 and higher. Then after your first AFR run, the AFR average difference compared to the +5% will give you a starting reference.
Example: your AFRs are 2% rich compared to your target AFRs. You had added 5% to the table. 5 - 2 = 3 %. Reset the 5% back to 0 (really 100%) and add 3% to the boost areas of the map.

Hi,
I have jsut received my datalogit kit from new zealand. It appears to be a universal one with a black box instead of cream box. I have been told that therefore I need to do a conversion on the boost map. Is this correct? If so why? And, if so, how!?
Can anyone shed any light on this please? Cheers.

Both work basically the same way with very minor differences.
It is a known fact that the scale/offset given for the map sensor is off/bad which causes both the boost and ABS Pressure values to be incorrect. Thus with a new untuned PFC, you can correct it so that your logs show accurate boost levels.
But most of us had tuned as was without any problems.
