Project Mitsu-7
Project Mitsu-7
Hey all!
Already posted about rear ends.
This project will take a while, but yeah, here it goes!
I will be swapping in a 4G63-T into my 1st Gen, and adding a bell housing to make the AWD engine RWD. probably using a 6-speed W-Series Tranny from a Supra.
Might either use my stock rear end till it blows, or just try swap over a T2 rear end, or a Ford 8.8.
This engine has always been a favourite of mine, since driving a few Talon TSi's.
I absolutely love the gear ratios, and powerband.
Also, the current fastest steet car is a DSM.....and I am hoping to make some good power out of this. 500HP easy on the stock block.
Anyways,
As soon as I begin, I will start taking pictures.
and when Done, I will try make a video.

sounds like quite a project you got planned, so here is a couple of things that will hopefully help you out.
1- the W series supra trannys are all 5 speeds, the only 6 speed supra trans is the V160 and 161 (aka Getrag 233) that came out of the twinturbo MKIV . the W transmissions aren't really all that strong so if your gonna use a MKIII supra tranny, get the R154(still only a 5spd) from the turbo model as they can take much more of an *** whoopin
2- for the rearend, your best bet is the 8.8" as our 1st gens are already setup for a solid axle. using a 2nd gen rearend means modifying the chassis for fully independant suspension and all the pieces to go w/ it, or modifying the chassis to accept the entire subframe from a 2nd gen.
3- 500 hp out of a 4g63 is feasable assuming you build the motor to negate such things as the notorious crankwalk, build a stock block/bottom end 4g63 to 500 hp is just asking for trouble especially on the older motors (newer age 4g's can probably take it for a little while longer)
good luck w/ your project, i hope you the best of luck
(p.s. i think this thread may have better luck gettin more info in the "other engine coversions" sub forum)

Hint:
Don't reinvent the wheel. You can use a Turbo2 transmission and follow much of the fabrication on other people's T2 swaps.
The Mitsubishi 4G54 2.6L I4 was used in the Mazda B2600 pickup truck from 1987-1988. This engine shares the Astron family wideblock bellhousing pattern. This truck also used the Mazda Model R transmission, which is the same model used in the Turbo II.
The truck transmission may have better gearing for torque, but the bell housing is removable for use on the FC version.
Starion/Conquest guys sometimes use T2 trannies in their cars.

DSM engine are pretty crappy from my experience unless you build them all the way. To start you will have to use the 6 crankbolt motor as it is the strongest one featuring thicker rods and stuff. I have 2 buddies that have that engine one with the 7 bolt, the other with the 6 bolt, the 6 bolt is being built up as we speak for something up to about 400-450 hp ...
you can get a 6 bolt design with the "wider" block that a T2 tranny will bolt up to.
id personally never run a 7 bolt due to the crank walk issues, BUT i have a friend who has a 7 bolt thats slightly built and 115k miles and he has no issues with it. i guess some get lucky.

The only other flaw in your plan that hasn't been pointed out is your "absolute love of the gear ratios" ... but you won't have the same ratios in another tranny. So the gears may not match the power band very well or at all. At least with Pele's suggestion of using the T2 trans... good idea BTW (I also researched this swap before deciding on doing my SR20DET), the ratios will be at least acceptable for a 4 cyl power plant.

thanks for all the ideas, I'll do more research, I'm still gonna stick with the 4G63T.
Might just use the DSM tranny.
a ford 8.8 rear end would indeed be the best one to choose. I agree.
as for SR20DET........OVER USED! ......I will never buy one just for that reason!
it's like buying a Honda Civic.......too many people do.

+1^ Also Overdone? In your city how many people do you know have a skyline engine swap? I'm sure if you knew of any you might count them on one hand if that. I know in my city there are none, over done is swapping a v8 engine into anycar, that is overdone and I can't even keep track of how many people have done that that in this city, hell i had 2 people just on my road that did that.
If you go to a meet and you have something that is different from alot of the other enthusiast to keep you in their eyes it will always be center of focus. Also DSM after market is no where near the skyline market. Parts are alot easier to source out.
For one of my upcoming projects, 240z the old school style, I've got 2 engines in mind for that, the skyline (20 or 26), or triple rotor, both turbo.

the only reason why sr20's seem to be overdone is because of the availiability and ease of transplanting into 240's (think of it as nissans "B-series"). the last sr20 powered vehicles are already about 5 years old. in japan, s15's may still be driving around but i bet the majority of s13/s14's silvias, pulsar GTiR's, sunny bluebirds, and many Serena's (silvia based minivan FTW) have already been sent to the salvage yards, so there is a plethora of engines pulled and ready for sale. either way sr20's are good motors (especially the ones in the pulsars).
^what do sr20's have to do w/ skyline swapped 240's?
p.s. you should really consider doing an RB25DET swap; they are a lot less money than the RB26, they came primarily RWD so you could use the skyline's tranny, and they are damn near a direct swap into 240's. my friend did the swap a year and a half ago and was even able to use all of the factory IC plumbing... the engine bay is almost identical to the rear drive skyline's

hahaha
I know where you're comming from with the SR20 comments.....
the V8 swaps and SR20 swaps are almost in equal quantities here on Van. Island.
I know like 15 people with SR20's in their cars. damn, even one guy had his shaved to a 2.4,.....so it's now an SR24.
DSM 4G63T's aren't rare, but they also aren't over used. I happen to think that putting one in an RX-7 would be unique.
I would rather give this a try, than some V8, or silvia engine. and a long block from a Skyline wouldn't fit......although it'd be a great choice.
If I was to choose something else, I'd think maybe a VG30DETT would be fun,
or a BP-T GTR engine.
Anyways, I'm gonna try sticking with the 4G63 for now. It's sitting right there in my friend's yard in his spare Eclipse.

dj-- i have a 71 240z ive got my eye on. its my brother exgirlfriends. as soon as i get better income and a place to store it, im buying it for a future project. itll probably get a SR20 or LSX.
i had a guy come into my work last night, advanced auto, and was saying he was having problems with his might max truck. we started talking and i asked him if it had a 4G64 and he said he didnt know. so i looked it up, and it does. he said he has a spare block and it is the "wide" block, so i might be picking that up from him. unfortunately i forgot to get his info, so i hope he comes back by.

Does everyone count out the KA24DET?
=(
I ve built both and had more fun and fast with KA's, but to say that the SR is **** cause its overused is insane. They last forever, (unlike a 4g63) the aftermarket is just as good if not better now due to the drift surge, and they come with RWD trannies attached to them =)
But i like the originality of the $G swap your doing it adds a little flare as well as fear (that it might dumpoil all over on the first clutch drop) Whats not fun about that?
LMAO
JK about the clutch drop part...

And the truth sometimes hurts... Ive been reading this section for a few months and finally became a member and it seems like everyone here has complexes with the "Im right because im too technical"
If you dont know what a KA24DET is ask... If you google it you get a **** ton of info... Maybe it isnt a production engine but its definately not an unknown subject...
=)
Want to know what a KA24DET is?
For all of the supposed ppl who dont know http://www.ka-t.org
Any other facts i should post?
-PSi
I think if its what you want you should go all out...
Theres tons of stuff i wish i had done back in the day before i had kids and a wife...
Do it if its what YOU want dont worry about what everyone else tells you, jus remember at the end of the day the only person thatcounts is you..
-PSi
PS* Im not a drag racer, but i think its a great idea... Question though...
This talon you speak of is it FWD or AWD?
