IRS swap

Anyone know where I can get info on swapping the rear center section in my '86 NA with the center section from a 2004 mustang cobra? I know it's been done before...I just can't find any info on it.

Thanks,

Jeremy

are you looking for a more powerful rear? the T2 drivetrain is quite strong if so. it can withstand very fast (11 sec) turbo cars on slicks.

I'm looking for something that will hold 800 hp. And more importantly, hold an instant onset of 300hp.

ya I've got an aluminum 427 going in with a NOS pro fogger setup.

The stock cobra rear isn't that great....but I can get upgrades for it from moser to make it bullet proof.

I can post some pics when it's completed. It's a street car that will be brought to the track...but it's going to be streeted 99% of the time....so I want to keep the IRS for handling reasons.

Any help would be great.

Thanks,

Jeremy

The turbo rear end will handle the torque load of any tire you can fit in the stock wheel house.

Unless you're tubbing the rear for big slicks, your main limitation will be traction.

traction is not a concern. Rear-end strength is.

www.misred.com I believe used a Corvette IRS setup. Check out www.torquecentral.com if you haven't already. It takes some seraching, but there's lots of info there.

Beware that everyone will tell you the Turbo II rear will hold up to a 9 second car on N20, and don't replace it until you know it's broken. I have one in my car and it's doing fine but once I build my nice motor (this is a junker only going to be running 11's) I will be looking at a back-half solution. I won't do anything until I do break the TII rear, but I want to be prepared when it does go.

Didn't realize this was already moved to the "other engine conversions" section. I guess you should have just said you were building your 13B to handle a 600 shot of nitrous to achieve your 800hp goal. The engine has NOTHING to do with changing out the rear. Maybe when someone wants to install aftermarket seat belt covers and asks about them it should be put in here too.

i dont think you want to go with the '03 cobra I.R.S. , theyre still working all the bugs out of them(noises, vibrations, problems with the axle bearings and axles) you might be better off with a corvette rear end. email mark at wrongmotor.com he was telling me about one of his friends doing the vette rear swap, the stock one finally broke after several runs with a nitroused ls1

FYI Jeremy, Robert ran that 9.17 pass (151mph) with a TII diff AND TII axles. btw, how can you be claiming to have the fastest street legal RX7 in CFL, when you've got a NA rear end in that thing????

It always amazes me when people know more about my car then I do.

PS look into MN12 8.8" center sections instead of the "Cobra" ones... they are the same, I have one on the shelf for $100.00 but it has a pencil dick 2.73 gear.

2.73 plus 427ci = 200+ mph

What happened to the all-aluminum 427? I guess he'll have to change his alias to rx6point27liter.

Well, except that the MN12 is cast iron and the Cobra case is aluminum, hence the $100 price tag...
