Other Engine Conversions - non V-8 Discussion of non-rotary engines, exc V-8's, in a car originally powered by a Rotary Engine.

About how much would it cost to do a Renesis swap in an FC?

OK Thread back from the dead.

You can go to the parts department at your local Mazda dealer and ask them to price the engine new. It is the exact same price as any other new rotary block which is somewhere between $5500-$6000.

The LS1 may be a great engine but I personally will never install a nonrotary engine in an RX-7. If I wanted an LS1 I would buy a Camaro, Corvette, or new GTO. That's where Chevy put them and I agree. If the guy wants to spend $9000 putting in a Renesis then more power to him and I hope he takes lots of pictures and posts them here. It isn't always about the most bang for the buck. We aren't talking Brazillian hookers here.

The Renesis only produces low power due to the ecu being tuned like crap from the factory. Go check out the RX-8 forum and look up the new piggyback ecu's. The cars can run with the 350Z with only a little tuning. An n/a 2nd gen can't do that unless it has the snot ported out of it and it weighs a few hundred pounds less and even then it is very unlikely.

Which EMS currently on the market would be able to control the Renesis ? Would it be able to keep the fly by wire set-up ?

Question

OK, first off, "hi RX-7 guys!" I'm an RX-8 owner, but not for long as I just crunched it. I'm not surprised to see that RG has about as many posts on here as he does on the rx8club.

So I already have an engine and transmission. In the current condition, I was quoted 4100 and 1200 value for each. Tho I probably won't be able to get that much. Or if it's not worth the hassle, I'll just have to sell the whole thing to mazmart.

My uncle has a 87 FC (NA version) that he's willing to give me for free or damn cheap. Considering I have the engine and all, how much money are we talking to shoehorn it in there?

Please, let's put aside the comments of "put an LS1 in there, it'll be cheaper". I already have the engine... at least give me credit for resurrecting an old *** thread.

This subforum is full of v8 swappers... I myself reconsidered, and am instead with an engine you likely never even heard of, fords 2.3turbo because its even cheaper and can make just as much power!

That said, sure, you could do it, but with $5300 total you could do a very nice engine swap, just with that alone! You could buy a LS1 with a T-56 with that and have money LEFT OVER.

If you went with a LT1 or ford 302 youd have thousands left over for mods, and with a SBC you could make a ton too, but I doubt youd care for a carburator or a custom EFI setup (which would cost a bunch unless you did megasquirt... which I doubt youd be willing to do).

That said, if you really want to go with a renesis, be my guest - but even a mild v8 swap (say, 300 hp or so?) would walk all over you, and then some, and have money left over.

Custom mounts, figuring out some way to actuate the e-throttle, tuning, etc, and you just might have about the same power as bone stock LT1, but without the torque. So, yeah. Decide what you really want, and do it... just see whats more imporatnt - sticking with a rotary, or getting performance?

I'm not really looking for power at this point. Just something that's driveable and a rotary. My uncle's FC was mined by a shady mechanic and the engine and tranny each took a ****.

I'm still waiting on the whole car quote, if that is enough, I'd probably go back to an 8.

How much does it take to fab custom mounts for everything and install it? $1000? More/less?

If you want driveable and a rotary get exhaust/headers, a good tune with standalone, maybe an intake, and you can be up to about 200 whp on stock ports... on a S5 motor IIRC. Not sure about S4. But, well, the FCs drivetrain took a **** on you, soo...

As far as mounts go... its really not that hard to make them if you have a welder and the ability to lay a good bead, and if you cant just tack weld and get someone who can to weld the tacked up mounts for you.

Id say $1K max to make mounts and install them, depending on how much the guy you find costs. A tranny crossmember would be even easier, so iD include that.

Now, if you werent so worried about rotaryness you could do a cheap but clean LT1 or 302H.O. swap and get 25-30 mpg with cheap bolt-in mounts

Well, it's something to think about either way. Thanks Nihilanthic.

for about six months until it blows up....... all turbo rotaries blow eventually.

As long as you properly maintain and tune the Turbo engine and not abuse it, it won't blow too soon.

Turbo Rotaries still tend to have compression degrade over time, faster than similar turbo piston engines out there typically do. Even if you dont 'blow it up' youll have compression leak down and inevitably need a rebuild.

Actually you'd also need a custom intake manifold and a few other mods to even considering 200HP on stock ports, 180 is the most with a custom HEADER (!), custom intake manifold, aftermarket ecu, and various little mods. And yes it was an S5 motor.

Those cheap bolt on mounts are ok, but locating the parts, the time, and the nickel and dime portion is what ***** you over. It's relatively simple to a mechanic, but to someone that really hasn't done anything like that before will be hit with headaches and have alot of surprised.

Also keep in mind sometimes V8's can have faulty parts and the such. There just is a little more to the swap then cheap bolt in mounts !

Anyways, onto the entire buy a V8 thing .

If he got a running 302 HO the only fualty **** he might have is a wire or sensor that got smashed up during engine removal, and if he cant change that out he has no business doing a swap.

The 302 sucks for fitment in the FC bay unless you want to excercise some fabrication unorthodoxy..... chivvies all the way.

T-II hood terribly unorthodox? :P

BTW, I'd SWEAR I saw someone do that to fit a 351 in a FC :o
