To Redrill or not to Redrill

Time for some advice from the lot of you. I am planning to redrill the front hubs to accept the 4x114 bolt pattern....anyone think I'm f**king crazy. OTherwise my only option is to MAKE some SE struts/brakes/hubs fit. Unless someone knows a company that will make custom hubs....

YES. most front hubs on any thing don't realy lend them selfs for redrilling. My thinking would be to get the hubs with the pattern you want and then have them turned to fit the bearings that go over the spindls. Real like to have more info on what you are trying to do

Yeah I've been very interested in this as well, I really want the 4x114.3 bolt pattern, and SE brakes all around would be awesome. Where did you find that info on the RX-7 strut swap? Man that would be a great upgrade for the front, more suspension options, bigger vented discs, and 4x114.3 bolt pattern to fit all the old school SSR/Hayashi/Watanabe/Yokohama/Work wheels (I've been really wanting a set of 14x8's with negative offset and maybe getting some bolt-on flares).

Yup...you got the same idea I do RE...I am currently sporting 14x7 SSR starsharks in the back but they are on 1 inch adaptors....making them 8"...no need for flares yet....9's would take flares. I got this info from a guy on the nopistons.com forum....he did it to his R100!

THe front hubs don't really lend themselves to be redrilled...not too safe looking.

I'd like to know the difference in center bore between our hubs and SE hubs...

Whoa awesome I love starsharks, you wouldn't happen to have any pictures of your car would you? I'd love to see it. I like my 13x7 Libre's but the deep dish rims get addicting and now I want more lip so I'm thinking 14x8 -14 offset SSR mkII's or mkIII's and then stretch some 185's across them. I was thinking of getting some Z or TE27 bolt-on flares but I'm not sure how much modification would be needed for them to fit well.

Any ideas for getting 4x114.3 in the back? I was thinking of shortening an SE rear-end but that would take a lot of work, since all the suspension mounting points would be different with the RX-2 being strut/lateral rod/4-link and the SE being shock and Watts link. The only other rear-end I could think of would be from an 85-87 Corolla GTS which a lot of the TE27/Starlet guys use. They have the same lateral rod/4-link like the RX-2 plus disc brakes and 4x114.3 bolt pattern. Not to mention all the aftermarket LSD's available for them; Cusco, Kaaz, TRD, ATS, etc. with 1,1.5, and 2-way types. Just throwing ideas out.

The only thing I can think of is actually redrilling the hub on the axle and the brake drum cover....I'm running out of ideas and may have to go find some decent 4x110's...new SSR's are too much and too hard to find in 110...although I have seen some Longchamps in 110, but only 6.5" wide.

The corrolla rear sounds interesting...is it the same size as the 2 or does it have to be cut?

I'd put up pics but the're too big...need to shink them first...plus not to mention I'm clueless on how to put them in the body of the message anyway...

Yeah that's the only problem with the Corolla rear-end, its about 4.5 inches longer than an RX-2, judging by their rear track (RX-2=51" Corolla=55.5"). That's really the only feasible swap I could think of thats from a small, rear drive, solid axle car with the 4x114.3, rear discs and the suspension set-up similar to an RX-2. Actually, the Corolla has a shock and spring set-up like the RX-7 but I've seen coil-over conversion kits for them that would make it compatible with RX-2's rear strut design.

This would basically be my dream set-up, the SE suspension in the front with big vented discs, 4x114.3, Ground Control coil-overs & camber plates with Tokico Japan HTS 45-way adjustable short-stroke shocks (made for the Corolla GTS but I've seen them adapted to 1st gens) and in the back the shortened GTS rear-end, again with 4x114.3 and nice discs, coil-over conversion, HTS shocks and maybe a Cusco/Kaaz 2-way LSD. This is actually the preferred drift set-up for most the AE86 guys that I talk to (something I've been into for several years). After this you could probably adapt most of the other aftermarket suspension for the GTS to fit pretty easily; adjustable lateral rods, 4-links, traction brackets, roll center adjusters, etc. I'm kind of rambling on but I think this would just be an awesome set-up for the RX-2 since its very similar in design and size to the old rear drive Corollas.

By the way, does anyone have a general idea of how much a shop would charge to shorten/adapt a rear-end? I'd think if anything it would cost less than the Ford rear-ends the draggers use, since it's closer to the size of a stock rear.

Oh and Jaime, if you want you can email me the pics and I can host them and post them up for you, the image host I use automatically shrinks the pictures down. locke17@hotmail.com

Good to hear you Rx-2 guys have some good ideas therer. I'm going to do a stud conversion to 5x100 on my '79 sev. Then I can get the wheels the car deserves! It may use redrilled or custom rear axles or even a tough and nasty ford 9". I think I'll change the watts link to a centre located equal length arm unit too. Do any of you guys run a watts link like this? It will be used for racing so I'll give it an adjustable rear roll centre while I'm at it too.
A friend of mine is going to change his stud pattern to 4x100.
