questions about what's in the RX-2 trunk

I feel like an archeologist digging through the rusted metal inspection covers in the trunk, now I have some questions:

1) how does one get to the fuel pump in this car? Near the fender I lifted up the remains of a cover and there's a fuel filter in there but I don't know if that's where I have to find the pump too.

2) the other cover revealed the top of the tank and the fuel level sender. Does the sender unscrew or is it pressed out?

3) in the above area there are two fuel lines with clams awfully close to the metal of the body so I can't reach them. Say I wanted to freshen up all my fuel lines, how do I get to them?

4) near the mystery emissions ignition computer thing there's a wire going to a little metal thing screwed to the trunk floor and it's really curroded. I pulled it off and inside there's a battery or something? It looks like agiant watch battery. what the heck is that?

thanks!

In one of the Rx2 books I have gotten it shows the fuel filter under one of the inspection covers that is located on the far left side of the trunk. I am thinking the fuel pump is located just under the left hand side of the trunk, were you have that part covering up something. Here is what my haynes book tells you.

A shield under the left rear mud-guard gives access to fuel pump

Hope this helps.

on the left side, under the quarter panel, there are 2 screws holding the plate cover. remove that and you will find the f/p.

probably unscrewed, never messed with it before.

if it aint broke, don't fix it

thanks guys. so do I access the fuel pump from underneath the car or from where the fuel filter is from inside the trunk? I'm really starting to suspect that my car is not getting fuel to the carb to keep the motor running so perhaps I need a new pump. Is there a parts interchange for the pump by the way?

The wires going to the mystery thingy screwed onto the trunk floor are both white, I'll try and get some photos taken tonight of the mess.

I suspect that my fuel level gage reading is wrong so I can to remove the level sender and see if it's stuck and can be cleaned/fixed. I also remember that in a BMW there's a little screen filter in the level sender so i cant to see if that's the case on this car and if it needs cleaning.

You get access to the fuel pump from underneath the car. Y0u should be able to get to the fuel lines coming out of the gas tank from there also. I can take some photos of mine later today if you need some more help finding it.

ah, ok, thanks. I will try and get under car tonight to take a look, I want to put some new fuel hoses in in case a bad hose is causing my fuel problems. I'd also like to inspect the pump because it may be dying or dead but still making a little noise. If I can't find it I'll definitely tak you up on the photos!

So far it looks like I will eventually have to:
- make my own fuel filter and level sender access covers (they rusted away)
- make my own trunk under-liner padding stuff (the stock stuff rotted and is now tossed)
- grind out the surface rust in the trunk, spray it with inhibitor and paint
- clean up or replace whatever that thing is that was wired to the computer box

you can use just a universal electric fuel pump from schucks/krager/checker if you want to, or you can use something like a Holley 6psi pump, but in that case you'd want to put a regulator up by the carb and limit the pressure to 3.5 psi or so. The fuel is really pretty generic - it just needs 12volts.

cool! I'm finally going to get to play with it today so if the fuel pump is dying I'll just replace it with a holley or carter and install a regulator up front then. I use a carter on my BMW with the pressure regulated to 4psi or so.

I was just curious if a 12A RX-7's fuel pump is the same unit, but maybe it's better to just buy a new one anyway.
