Performance 12A

As I said in an old post, I'm using a 12A in my mini - but I'm now making it into a drag car (no emission tests needed) So what mods would get the most power from my 12A? I don't care about fuel consumption or emissions obviously!!

The setup I'm thinking of using would be:
# Weber carb
# straight through exhaust (no thermal reactor)
# some form of porting (help needed here!!)
# watermist exhaust cooling system
# rats nest removed
# air pump removed
# uprated coils and HT leads

any help would be really appreciated

mainly just headers and good exhaust mixed with a street (oir bigger) port job. Turbo/intercoold comes to mind as well. Just check out all the rotary cars that are the fastest drag cars and do what they do . . .

pre '87 rotary engines don't require anything more than a visual test in the UK anyway.

I'm not too clued up about what parts work best together but I'll have a bash.

Port - big bridge port or maybe a Peripheral Port if you have the £££'s or knowledge to DIY it.

Carb - Big weber IDA (51 ?) or FI equivilent

Might be best if you headed over to www.mazdarotaryclub.com and asked around as a lot of this info is going to need to be UK specific as you won't want to be buying to many bits from the US due to the cost of taxes etc. + finding someone to build an engine isn't going to be easy if you ask on here.

It dosn't need to pass any tests since it will be purely for the 1/4 mile, I've found a supercharger at
http://www.atkinsrotary.com/supercha.htm
but this uses a Holly carb (woohoo!)

Does anyone know of any sites which can give details on how to port the engine? Such as sizes and locations - I'd prefer to have a Peripheral port to get maximum fueling - but I've got no idea on where it goes!!
I can't afford to have it done for me, so I'll be doing it myself.

I don't want to really buy "off the shelf" parts, since these are usually conservative and try to keep emissions fairly low, and therefore keep the power down a bit.

pre '87 rotary engines don't require anything more than a visual test in the UK anyway.
We don't have a visual check over here, we just get a sensor rammed up the exhaust for a few minutes and then get a basic pass/fail printout. The emission laws over here aren't as stringent as the US (hence why we got the Skyline without importing)

uhm yes we do have a visual check. Pre-87 rotaries are checked to the old laws which is rev the engine a look at the exhaust to check for smoke. I have the pages from the MOT manual copied out if you would like to see.

The new Euro 4 (or whatever) emmissions laws are actually stricter than the US laws now. (hence why we get a detuned RX8 to meet the new standards) but you are correct in stating that our retrospective emmissions laws are much lower.

I would do a search on peripheral ports in the rotary performance section if you are thinking of DIY'ing it. You should find a very usefull thread in there.

Not sure how a supercharger will work with a PP setup though (lots of overlap and boost = not ideal if you don't plan it very carefully)

What sort of power are you shooting for ?

I only wanted a peripheral port because I remeber from somewhere that they're the best ones if you're dumping loads of petrol into the block!!

On the website for the supercharger, they achieved 233Bhp http://www.camdensuperchargers.com/index.php?pag=304

This was with a port and polish, So I need to try and find the best type of porting for boosting

Peripheral ports are usually run on N/A engines. I'm sure there are a few exceptions though.

The usual rule with forced induction is low overlap otherwise you tend to blow the intake charge into the exhaust. (just going on the bits and bobs I've read)

233Bhp would be cheaper to achieve if you traded the blower for a turbo or even swapped the entire engine for one out of a TII. (supercharger setup alone would probably run more than buying a decent engine + turbo ??)

The thing is, I've also got a bet on with my mates who say that my old 12A wont make anything below 14 secs! So i'm out to prove them wrong!!
