Help! 77 SP Mechanical Problems
What could be wrong? While driving my RX3-SP on Fwy in 5th gear at a constant speed of about 75MPH I noticed a slight to moderate loss of power. (I had to step on accelerator more to maintain my speed. Car could also increase speed with more throttle input.) I continued on Fwy for about 100 miles (trip was from Bakersfield to Modesto) & exited. Car ran extremely ruff upon exiting (missing/back firing/ no power). Here's the kicker: Car runs fine until tacometer hits about 1,200 RPM then I have to shift to next gear to keep tach under 1,200 RPM or car has the problems again. Once I shift to next gear I can SLOWLY increase speed until I go through all the gears (if I keep it under 1,200 RPM). When I hit 5th gear car then accelerates smoothly and almost normally. I can only exceed 1,200 RPM in 5th otherwise car almost stalls out, boggs down and has multiple backfires. Engine is all original, points, thermal reactor and all but has two Capacitive Discharge Ignitions from Fedco (yeah its straight up old school). Anybody ever have this happen and know what this could be????? Thanks.

One more thing. On same trip lights quit working on low beam before loss of power problems. Unknown if this is related or a separate issue. Thanks.

Bring it back to fedco off rodeo drive for warranty. Didnt know they sold ignition. First, not sure if you still jave points dizzy but i would check thw gap and timing and fuel for blockage. Compression check is good also but if compression is bad, you have to keep rpm high to keep it running

And I thought someone would remember Fedco on La Cienega and Rodeo Rd.

Thanks guys. I figured out the problem today. The Mark Ten B capacitive discharge ignitions I have finally gave out after 30 years! Actually the boxes still work, the control unit is what went out. The unit has a tachometer & control lead wire that apparently tells the boxes how.much spark to give based on load. Once my racy hit 1250 the spark wasn't sufficient to power the distributor. I disconnected this control wire and now the car runs fine. Granted my acceleration is not as quick now but at least I'm rolling. Hope this helps if anyone has the same problem. Time for a new C.D.I.....
