Hb 929i (aka gramps)

Hi all,

this is my build, its a 1986 929 HB hardtop sedan, the top spec luxury model with air con, sunroof, auto adjusting suspension (which still works ), oscillating dash vent (also still works) and a fully retro cassette player with eq and amps.

i originally had 2 x 2door 929’s to build, but they were far too much work for me at this time, this car came up for sale and i snapped it up, bought it from an 80yr old had owned it since 1990, he had kept every single receipt!!

anyways, plans are to build a 90’s looking car with new engine bolt ons, i have a 13brew, fully rebuilt with extend porting, balanced, efr 9180 iwg, haltech elite 2500 ecu, I’d injectors, pre turbo w/i, hopefully around 550rwhp on pump fuel.

I will put up pics over the next few weeks of the car, engine, stereo and other stuff I’ve gathered over the last 2yrs, but in the meantime, here is the car and the engine.

krem

Wheels are ROH chicanes, 16x7.5 rears, 16x7 fronts with 205 50 Toyo r1r tyres

Ok, so i thought i might get some more pics and details up of my project.

As stated above, its a 1986 HB hardtop, i cam across it on gumtree here in Australia (sort of like craigslist i guess), at the time i had a Nissan bluebird trx and 2 HB coupes with pop up lights, all 2 were full projects, requiring full Re sprays etc, and i just wasn’t in the mindset nor had the time or money for that kind of build, so this car came up and i pounced on it, here was a car i could drive and enjoy while i gathered parts for the conversion.

it has a 2.0lt efi engine and 5sp, its pretty slow but corners really well, the Toyo r1r tyres are magical in both wet and dry.

anyways, since i was in my prime (early 20’s) in the 90’s i decided to do a 90’s looking build, so basically everything for the car (less bits like ecu and turbo) are going to be from the 90’s, so all the stereo is from the 90’s down to the rca cables, its all old alpine stuff, i got it all really cheap and it all bench tested well.

im really hoping to start the conversion around may next yr, i still have a few things to gather, so for now, i will just throw up some pics of the stuff ive collected over the last few years.

Here is the beast the day after i picked it up, my girls call it gramps, as its a car a grandpa would drive, and we got it from a 80yr ols

The wheels are ROH Chichane, ive had them for nearly 15 yrs, they were in bad shape so i had the centres re powder coated

After nearly 100 hrs of sanding and polishing the rings, this is the result

Here is my 90’s momo wheel, suits the car really well, made it so much nicer to drive

The retro cassette player, all still works,

Retro LED dash,

Sorry about the big pic size, I’m **** house at using technology

Here is my head unit, was over $1200 new in the 90’s, i got it for $100, lol

Will only be using one of these in a small sealed box,

Not sure if i will use these or another pr i have, cant seem to find pics of the others right now

These will be used for rear fill, they look way better in person, its amazing that something over 20yrs old can still be in such good cond

Here is my crude bench testing station, and some of my amps in the background, there are a few more

Some more audio stuff, everything i have bought (there is more than in the pics, including a pr of earthquake subs,) has cost me less than $600
then the good stuff, engine bits and pieces

Here are my alpine amps i have to choose from, i have a few old Fosgate stuff too, but everything Alpine just seemed to fall in my lap so will stay with the one name,

I used to compete in the IASCA comps in the 90’s and a mate who used to compete too used this box, he was moving house and gave it to me

Probably the best 6x9 speakers ever, i wont be using them tho as they are too big for rear fill, but i bought them with the componetes in this post, guy wouldn’t seperate and i got them soooo cheap

Soooo nice

Theses are simply like new, and a friend had some new in the day and they sound amazing!!

Ok, so here are some stuff ive got for the engine

We all know how big the 9180 is, but wat the heck, here are some comparisons with a standard coke can

Picked this with the turbo right before Xmas, some guy “needed” cash and i “needed turbo and ecu”, the pr brand new cost me $3k,

Want to do boost by gear, so got 4 solenoid

Turbo beanie was free with my manifold, the exhaust manifold and housing will be ceramic coated, want to keep heat down in engine bay

Here is my manifold, I couldn’t afford the turblown cast manifold, and SDR build these for around $300, and threw in the beanie too!!

Started to clean up Bolton’s, want to make the car comfortable to drive, so power steering and aircon is a msut

Engine mocked up with turbo

Manifold gave me nice clearance to inlet

Had a problem with the filler neck,

So i cut it with the hacksaw

Good old JB weld

Looks a bit weird, but will still work (hopefully), i may not need it as i might go with EWP and FD radiator, its only mock up for now tho

Turbosmart upgrade

I’m running a supra diff (hb is IRS) and i got this hilux LSD for cheap, will shim it up nice and tight when i rebuild it,

Supra/Cressida diff

Ok, so i got some new brake rotors, still std sized but since these run the same 4 wheel discs as the 12at cosmo HB (and they were the quickest jap car of the day) then a simple upgrade should suffice, and i can only do 110kh here on the street, lol.
The Preston lump is also way heavier than the 13brew, so it should all work well,
so ive got some j hook rotors and EBC black stuff pads
