Could get my hands on 2 non-running RX-2's
Hello all, kinda new here...
A buddy of mine's step-dad has 2 RX-2's rotting in his yard hillbilly style. I'm not sure if they have engines or not, but I was wondering how much I could learn from pulling the engine and taking it apart? I don't have a lot of mechanical experience, so I was thinking this would be a good way to learn, since I will eventually own an FD.
Any ideas? Should I bother with this? And what version of the engine was in the RX-2? Was it the 10a or was it newer than that?

Well those old twin 12a motors are ok to pull apart and inspect, but I really don't think I'd ever rebuild one. Especially with the stock 6mm Apexs. Those are the ones that were famous for their "lack of reliability.
I do know of one guy with a pristene 4 door RX2 that made it to 86,000 miles before he elected to take it to the local rotary guru and have him put new seals in its original twin. That was an exception to the rule for the most apart. I always run into the guy who says" I had an RX something that had 6 motors replaced under warranty by Mazda before I got rid of that thing". To buy a Vega or a Pinto no doubt.
Unless I was doing a restoration of an old twin car and authenticity was important I'd can the old twin.
Go get the RX2 tubs anyway and sell them to a collector. I bet someone out there has a need for some of those parts.
Now the one exception for RX2's was the single dizzy 74 motor. Its good to rebuild. Oil seals are usually the problem and reliability is much better.

*sob* Man... it's like I'm *never* gonna get an early RX... there's so much I'd do with an RX-2! Better rearend... bridge ported 12A... upgraded front suspension... well okay that's about it, but that's all I'd really need

i'm very short on funds right now, + I have no room (we have 5 cars in the yard - used to have 8 and the city said get rid of the ones on the grass - I get rid of all of MY cars and my roommate keeps HIS... GRRR) otherwise I'd jump on it. The RX-3 wagon sounds tasty though!

repuguru - I don't even know how much to ask for the stuff, but I'm pretty sure I could get the guy to just give me the cars, he'd probably be glad to get them off his yard. As far as the engine, I'm not concerned with actually getting it to run, I'd just like to be more knowledgeable in how the rotory works/goes together so when I do get an FD, I won't be completely ignorant about things.
Madman - I'll let you know the condition of the body and interior once I get a closer look at them.

If you are given the merchandise then any money you make will be 100% profit . You can only do well no matter what you sell for. Go get it...
