Cosmo 20B JC RPM & Speedo not working

Hi guys! A friend of mine has a JC Eunos Cosmo 20B TT it is in mint condition. The only fault is that the speedo and rpm gauges stopped working a few days ago. Has anybody tinkered with these clusters? I have fixed FD clusters but I don't know if this is even in the same lane...

Yes. This is a very common issue on JCs. Tell your friend to find the Cosmo Owners Facebook Group. There is a guru (Anthony) in there that does these repairs.

+1 for Anthony. I'm in the Cosmo Owners Group as well. I've had a few talks with him about fixing various electronics on the Cosmo and he is the first, last and ONLY person whom I'd entrust a Cosmo cluster to. This sounds like your cluster has a few leaking capacitors. Are there any other symptoms? Excluding issues with information coming in from the Speed Sensor (12v square wave, 4 pulses per rotation) and tachometer (from trailing coil, signal is similar to FC), the most likely symptoms of leaking electrolytic capacitors is communication problems on the PalmNet system. Behaviors like audio going wacky, or items normally controlled by the steering wheel buttons just "locking up" are a clear sign of it.

Is the vehicle in question equipped with the CCS? They seem to be especially sensitive to glitchiness in the PalmNet system. Anthony has been making solid progress toward permanent CCS repairs. Hopefully once I finish cleaning up the WM-2009 Workshop Manual translation, it'll be a lot easier since all of the pertinent information is in there.
