Steve Kan July Tuning Day

Bio:

For those that have not heard of Steve Kan here is a little bio from his website:

Steve Kan is one of the most renowned car tuners in the world. He has tuned countless vehicles using name brand aftermarket fuel management systems. He has evolved his own skills and methods tuning rotaries, and piston engines. Click Here to read what people have to say.
Steve started his tuning journey in 1995 from his personal vehicle. After success with his car, along with many others who wanted his tuning ability services, he started making a name for himself in the rotary community. In 1998 he teamed up with Rotary Performance, and launched his professional racing career. Since then he has opened his own performance facility in Fort Worth, called Gotham racing, and travels all over within the United States providing tuning services.
“Many people ask how I came up with the shop named Gotham racing. The answer is very simple. My race car was nicknamed the "Bat Mobile " at the tracks and local street scene.”
Steve earned a degree in BSEE (Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering) and has a wealth knowledge with electronics and programming. In college, he was involved with the SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) program as a hardware designer for the engine management system. This, among other things, is what makes Steve one of the best Rotary and Piston tuners in the world.

Acceptable ECU’s

Haltec
MicroTech
MoTec
GReddy eManage
Wolf3D
APEXi PowerFC
APEXi AFC
Hydra EMS
AEM EMS
Autronic

Tuning costs:

$350 - Stock Turbo up to 12psi of boost (pump gas only) 1 map
$400 - Aftermarket Turbo up to 16psi of boost (pump gas only) 1 map
$450 - Aftermarket Turbo from 16psi - 25psi of boost (race gas and/or auxiliary injection only) 1 map
$600 - Aftermarket Turbo up to 25psi of boost (pump gas and race gas tune) 2 maps

On all tuning sessions there is a Non-refundable $200 deposit.

Additional costs will be applied for dyno time. Most tunes take anywhere from 1-3hrs.

Location/Dyno type:

Depending on the amount of cars we might rent the dyno for 2 days. In order to book the dyno I need to gauge interest. Dyno time will most likely be spent at Jet City Tuning in Puyallup. It is a 2 wheel Dyno Dynamics dyno. It also has the ability to do steady state tuning which provides a large advantage for the tuner.

Additional information:
Questions:

If you have any questions please send me a PM. I will be coordinating the event. Also all of the people that I have talked with that are still interested in getting a tune please PM me or comment in this thread.

As I keep doing these I find that we can really only tune about 6-7 cars in one day. Anything less than that and we are sitting, anything more there is not enough time.

As it sits there are only 6 people that are confirmed. If we have more than that I will kick it to 2 days.

If you are on the undecided list please let me know if you are still interested in the tune. If you do not respond within the next couple weeks I will remove you from the list. If you are not sure if you can make it this time but would consider a 3rd session please tell me that. We might be able to set another session up. There are no promises on a 3rd session.

I'm planning on it. I've got the PFC, but just haven't installed it yet. I know it should be a simple thing, but I've proven that simple things can get me in trouble.

So, as long as the PFC gets installed I'm good.

FWIW, I've also got a datalogic coming. My thought is to take the tune that Steve does, then use it as a base to tweak to create a map to pass emissions.

David the next time I'm at work I will PM you a link to a thread you'll want to see. There are a coupl of wires that need removed or relocated in the harnesses for the PFC install. Very simple. Something like 1 wire relocation and one removal. The one relocation is an A/C wire I believe. But it is a 5-10 minute install depending on how long it takes you to get the harnesses unplugged. And also just a warning if you're running the Commander as well you'll need to notch the bracket for the ecu to fit the cable, that's if you're using factory ecu brackets

Nope, waiting to get my motor back from BDC. I sent him my plates to get ported. I am about to send him my internal engine parts to get balanced because I haven't found anybody in our area that can do it for as cheap as he can. ($250ish) I already got my primary ports back and they look amazing, I would recommend him to anyone.

While I am waiting for this stuff to come back, I am going to move the engine I have now into guanico's old car, and NA-T it so I have a car to drive. I hope to have it all rebuild, installed, and able to start by the end of the month. That will give me ~20 days to get all worn in and all the problems fixed. I work from home doing websites and computer stuff, so I normally spend 8+ hours working on my car, or until my back feels really bad from being leaned over the whole time.

The only part I am really worried about is installing the haltech. I have done everything else before (rebuilt, reinstalled, blah blah), but the standalone is going to be a new challenge. But if I take my time, I am sure I will be ok.

I have ended up dropping a lot of the stuff I wanted to do with the car. I have a whole box of mazdaspeed parts (suspension mainly) that I wanted to install but it it not required to have done before the dyno session so I am going to have to wait. Also I will be skipping the meth injection this year. But that too will save me some time.

So in short, nope, my car is not ready, but it will be. I have done a lot more in a shorter period of time. So count me in for sure.

I gotta take myself off the list for the time being. Steph and I found a condo we want so that takes priority for now. If everything goes really smoothly I may get back in on this -hopefully. It'd be nice to get another tune session towards the end of the year. Seems like we have alot of interest in the undecided lot that perhaps will be up for a tune later on.

I'm currently running into a problem with clr motorsports not comming up with my manifold. This may throw a wrench into my whole production timeline. I may not make the july deadline. I'll try to keep everyone informed. Thanks for organizing this. I'll be in touch.

Thanks Hank. Just keep me updated through this thread or PM. Regardless of whether you make it or not this tuning day should be a go still.

Dyno payment is going to depend on how many people we have. The maximum that I want per day is 6 people. That would work out to 110 per person. If more than 6 people are tuning for the day I will equally split it across the weekend and we can see if it would be cheaper to rent the dyno for the entire day or go with a per hour rate.

Just some simple math:
6 cars (whole weekend/1 day) 6 people per day / 650 for the dyno = 110 per person

8 cars (whole weekend/2 days) 4 people per day / 650 = 165 per person

10 cars (whole weekend/2 days) 5 people per day / 650 = 130 per person

The dyno rents out for 125/hr so you can see why renting it for the entire day is a smart idea. Most cars take 1-2hrs to tune, so the average bill would be 125-250.
