impact gun

Does anyone in the Portland area have an impact gun they want to lend me, I'm trying to do a five lug swap and I've gotten the fronts done, but I've broken a number of wrenches trying to get the hub nut off?

Yeah not very cool, I've got no more 1/2 drives :/

I might try buying something with a lifetime warranty so I can break it and return it, but that stuffs expensive.

BTW I'll give up gas money or somethin' so I'm not a total leach :P

Kinda late in the game, but are you trying to break it loose with all other parts/ bolts already loosened? One trick ive found is removing the center caps and puting the wheel on the car, lowering the car to the ground. The weight of the car holds the hub in place, then you can stand on a breaker bar to get it loose. Of course, if its snapping 1/2" drive bars already, then you might be screwed. Soak in PB blaster and try again?

OR.... go to walmart and buy their cig lighter powered roadside impact gun for like 2o bucks. LOL... im not even kidding which is the scary part. It really does work.

yes do the standing on bar trick that works. or go to your nearby harbor freight store and pick up a gun. if your breaking 1/2" bars as is then stray away from the electric powered, both battery and 120v. Although the cig lighter ones may work they are usually putting less than 150 ft lbs of torque to the bolt so. . . maybe.
If you have access to a compressor(a decent compressor) then if possible pick up an air impact. (#'s 2623 i have this one and its a beast. or 94803 the twin hammer one. it will put i think 420 ish? ft lbs of torque) Those are some options the second gun is around 50 bucks and should do the trick for pretty much anything you throw at it. I work at the bellevue HFT and use pretty much every tool. they will do. If you were up near me i could hook you up, sorry bro. but you wont find much better of a deal as far as price is concerned. They. . .we i guess lol offer a replacement plan for it, i suggest getting it because you will more or less get a brand new one if you break it within 2 years. The more or less being you need to provide a phone number lol so i hope no problems there. anyhow my 2 cents. hope it helps mang.

Hit it with a torch for a few & spray PB blaster on it

do this a couple times so the oil can really do it's job.

It should come off easier.

Cool that you got it with the impact, I like to have some 3/4 stuff in the tool box for some of the really hard stuff.

Well I finally got them off, I tried your method with no success first. I think it would have worked on the drivers side but not the passenger which I was working on. I ended up having to have my grandpa make a tool for me to pull it off. The passenger side never broke loose I had to slowly press it out until the end... The driver side came out easily in comparison.

I'll take a picture of the tool later, basically a plate with holes for the lugs and and indent for the shaft. If anybody ever has the same problems I got what you need now.

Time to put it all together now

Had same problem on my 86. Had to remove hub support and press the 1/2 shaft out. took about 8ton pressure Seems passenger side gets stuck the most.

So as read this one thinking ###### all that is realy needed is a T bar lug wrench which can be found at most junk stores, and keep in mind the torqu is about 85ftlb for tightening it, or maybe some one over did that part already,

i hope you're talking about the axle nuts...
front hub nut spec is 22ft.lbs, rear is ~80

back when mine were stuck, i put a breaker bar on it, slipped a pipe over, and jumped on it. if you can keep the car still, you can get a ton of torque on there using a long *** bar

I did that only to break two wrenches and almost another breaker bar before I stopped.

Front spindle nut which is used to adjust the perload for the bearing is just a little more then finger tight and then you find and aline the two closese holes and slip in the cotter pin, the lug nut are going to be around 85ftlb and some times I do get a little cranky

The rear spindle nut was the problem then the hub itself was locked to the spindle.
