what to do with rats nest/carb....suggestions please
As we have the Nikki out of my son's RX7, and jsut about ready to go back in, it is time to think about all those vacuum lines and crap.
Obviously, at the very least, I will replace ALL of the vac lines that are now in easy reach with the carb off. WHIle I am at it, though I am tempted to remove some of the emissions crap. (emissions is not an issue for us)
I have read that the PCV system should be preserved. What other systems actually help? I guess my fear is that one or more of these archaic emissons control systems will be malfuntioning, leading to more problems. However in the "if it aint broke dont fix it department", the car DID run ok except for the bog right off idle which is why we pulled the carb. (carb issue seemed like a transition circuit problem, the accel pump was rotten, and the carb was generally dirty)
I think I will plug off the sub zero fluid thing. Right? I dont even know what the heck that is, we dont live in Alaska or anything.
I just dont know which way to go here. Replace all the hoses and hope that the carb rebuild took care of the bog seems to be the easiest. I have no desire to rip the nest out for asthetic's sake, we are not building a race car here, I just want to make the car reliable for my son. It is certainly fun enough it stock form!
Any suggestions or input would be appreciated. Mostly what I am looking for is this:, are there any one or two problematic items in the nest or carb that I should for sure rip out and plug off while I have it down?
Thanks!
Neil

What fun. Broke two delay valves and what I think is the AC solenoid valve. Everything is rotten and brittle. Doorman makes some cheap delay valves, dont care about the AC since the lines for that have long since been cut and I dont even think the compressor is in there.
As of now, Im just trying to relace all of the vac lines....probably take me tomorrow to get that done at least.

ok, well the doorman products were check valves NOT delay valves. So I repaire the old delay valves, but better then just JB weld. I used some vac fittings to place new nipples all together, bored the end JUST enough so that they fit tight....they were structurally somewhat sound before I added copius JB PUTTY all around. It will last longer than the rusty frame of this old girl.
It was NOT the AC valve that I broke, but guess what, the AC valve made a dandy substitute. (same part number). Capped off the AC thang.
Talking to hear myself talk at this point, well no, for posterity's sake if theres some other poor schmuck like me that may benefit from this post I figured I would answer my own questions.
Perhaps when I graduate to the big boys tech forums it will not be so quiet! LOL. And, you CAN find just about anything you need by searching old messages anyway.
Anyhow, got almost everything hooked up.

I wound up replacing hoses and fittings, etc.
I got it running tonight, and the bog that I was getting is totally gone. There are still some issues to address, the idle with choke on is WAY too high. The idle is a bit too low now, the previous owner was all over the place with the timing and the mix screw trying to fix what was a carb badly in need of a rebuild so Ive got to get those set as well.
I think I will dismantle the nest piece by piece as I learn more about it, but if it runs good, I may just leave it alone. I just dont know how much of it's small quirks are because of the nest items ya know?.....
So ultimately do they run better without the emissions crap? Is the WHOLE nest emissions related or is some of it needed.....
I dunno, I will see if I can resolve the last few hiccups and go from there.

The secondaries are not working, I will check the vacuum on the line that I hooked that actuator to, perhaps I will put it elsewhere if there is poor vacuum there.
They had worked before I rebuilt the carb....I will say this, acceleration is MUCH snappier after the carb rebuild. I mean night and day. And thats WITHOUT the secondaries! Once I get them working again, this thing is gonna RIP!
Yeeha! Im just glad we passed this milestone, I no longer think the seals are bad or whatever.
