KS weird running

bought an 88 TII, this is not my first rotary. I made the deal contingent on him towing it to my house, he had told me it had a blown motor. He DRIVES it over, so I am immediately suspicious of the blown motor theory. I put a new battery and some fresh fuel in it and go for a drive:

runs great below about 5k. Once over 5k sometimes its great all the way to the buzzer and sometimes, not.

you can hear the turbo whistle but the boost gauge is erratic.

it wont idle after the engine is warm.

The only mods are the RB stainless 3" complete REV TII exhaust and the matching fuel cut defenser.

vacuum lines? I checked the ones I can see, are there more? The engine is super clean and runs just beautifully except as above. Maybe the AFM flapper is stuck? I am hoping this is a simple problem because it really does run well.

There is an RX7 guru here in wichita but the last time I took a car there he charged me 800 labor to put dual sidedrafts on my 85 12a.

here is the car for you pic hounds.

Sounds like the Exhaust Controller could be messed up, it controls how the flapper door works on the exhaust manifold.

But it doesn't sound like a blown motor, it may have some low compression do to the hot starting issues

thanks, how do I check the wastegate (that is the tech name for the flappr door, right?)

and I dont have any hot start problems, it just wont idle when warm, you take your foot off the gas and blip! the engine is off. it starts right up, hot or cold, barely cranks at all.

The wastegate isn't what i am talking about, on the S4 TII there is a Dual Scroll setup on the turbos manifold, it directs all of the exhaust thru a smaller hole in the turbo to make it spool faster, if this door was opening or closing at the wrong time it would cause boost issues.

I guess i didnt read right on the other issue, it could be a simple as the idle control screw/

ok thanks, how do I go about checking the dual scroll setup? I think it may be something simple related to the install ofthe downpipe and associated, because those parts are almost new.

You think an idle screw adj will do it? I figured warm running was closed loop and set by ECU codes more than throttle plate but this is my first turbo rotary so I will have to claim ignorance here and thank you for the suggestion. I will try turning the idle up tomorrow.

ok, thanks. I will do some poking around after work.

a friend said last night the intake piping may be loose too, which might explain the boost problems and why the thing wont idle. Sound reasonable?
