If I'm not mistaken, porting a wastegate makes it more responsive and less of a "light switch-on/light switch-off" affair...but I'm not a turbo guru by any means. Let's see what the 2ndgen guru's have got to say.

People port there wastegate (typically on s4 turbos) to eliminate boost creep. Boost creep is when you keep building boost in wide open throttle because of the wastegate being too small and allowing too much exhaust gases to run through the turbine and not enough out the wastegate. I would recommend it to keep you from over boosting and leaning out.

i have an s4 engine and an s5 turbo. would this make a differance or should i port to be on the safe side? would a turbo timer be a good investment?

Do you have any boost creep issues right now? A turbo timer is really not necessary because rx7 turbos are water cooled. So they really don't get as hot as other turbos.
