want a quality motor. where to buy?
k, so i'm gonna start to save some $$$ and do as much research as i can on which motor i want to stick into my s4 body s5 conversion. so, i'd like to know what companies are trusted for re-man or new motors. i'd like the turbo housings for portability on the exhaust. and the possibillity of a turbo.
and, i've read about half of what i need to know about megasquirt from muyti's faq page, and some links. i'll be using the v3 board, i believe. (after i've got the motor broke in.)
so, what i'd like to know is which company to get a good motor at.

You can't really buy a "new" or a "remaned" motor anymore. Most of the stuff will be used but still good parts. The seals, stat gears, bearings, etc. will be new and SHOULD be new.
Do you already have a motor? If you do, alot of rotary specialists will rebuild it for you, but always remember that you might need extra money if you need new housings or rotors.
If you don't have a motor, it's going to be a little more difficult. Most rebuilders require a core motor.
Try out rotary resurrection, or BDC in Texas. I am drawing a blank right now as far as engine builders go, it's late. lol

k, so mazdatrix has a t2 motor for about $5500, new block components, but also $2400 for used block components.
is that about right for what i'll be spending anywhere? just a basic motor. no porting or anything fancy.

if you want a new motor, probably go the route rowtarded said. my preference, i'd tear the motor apart to see if i need new housings or irons or rotors. then rebuild. my mechanic suggests atkins rebuild kit with rotary aviation seals. but if you have the extra change to buy a freshly built short block and build off it, then that'd be a good way to go. for used engines, i just used the yellowpages on jdm motor shops. im in jax, so im using jdm of miami. happy building.

I don't mean to offend anyone, and this information is just from what I read on their ebay page regarding their warranty policies at rotary resurrection.
It does not cover any shipping costs at all, regardless of who is at fault during their 30 day unlimited mileage warranty period. And to use the warranty, it requires that you ship it to them for warranty inspection where they determine if it even qualifies. They note that tearing it down for any reason before sending it to them voids the warranty. Additionally, labor might be charged if the engine ends up not being covered by the warranty. Priority is also not placed on any engines and all are done in the order received, new orders and warranty replacements included.
Long distance auto work is a tricky thing and I understand they are just covering themselves, however unintentional as it may be, shipping and labor costs for a non-warrantied engine could end up costing you more than buying a used jdm import. They also had an odd rant at the end of their warranty about being banned from this forum :P off topic but amusing.

Just send rotary resurrection an email, he can answer any type of question you have. Dealing with these cars, you can find new parts like housings or rotors or plates, but doing EVERYTHING new is very expensive. If you blew a seal, depending on which one, you can either have a destroyed housing or plate.
Also, what motor? S4, S5, Turbo, N/A?

oh yeah, it's an s5 n/a. i'm not sure that i want to delve into a teardown into my motor. although i am a little weary about the warranty side. like matt said it's kinda sketchy. but, for a poor-style budget guy like me. it may just be perfect!
i'll be checking out the texas place today, too. and i've got another offer from my friend with an s4 t2, but i've gotta read the thread about s5-s4 sames/difs.
