using rtv instead of hylomar?

I was wondering if its safe to use red high temp red rtv for the water seals instead of hlyomar, pretty much all it does is keep the water seals in place right?

Yeah Ive been reading alot of other thread I found, I think Crisco would work best. I did read that one but it really didn't offer much info that helped.

Personally I think hylomar would work best. I never had any problems.

i use petroleum jelly, too. i've never used Hylomar for any engine i've built - and so far no issues - ever. actually, i'm kind of curious about it, but since i've heard all the old Hylomar guys saying that it pretty much sucks now, my enthusiasm to try it has waned.

if that gets the job done, then do it that way. at the end of the day, you're really not trying to smother too much of that stuff all over the seals. a few well-placed fingertip dollops works most times, but sometimes you need more.

i don't really have a rule, save one: i basically apply as much as i need to keep the seals in place, particularly when the intermediate housing goes face down and you have to do that little dance with the shaft. the last thing you need is to have one of them move and get pinched because you're not likely to find out until it's too late.
