Exclamation Undiagnosable Sa22 problem?

Hey guys, this is my post, so let me say hi. Names kamren and just gettin into the rotary world and lovin it. Just found out about these boards and saw the extent of information and dedication and had to make an account. So since this is a help and a intro ill throw up some pics of my car too. But down to the real problem

I bought this car a few months back and it seem to be running in a good condition. Everything seems to be bone stock from the factory. It took a few months until it started acting wierd. I got under the car recently and discovered there is no downpipe connecting my exhaust. Which i never discovered because it lines up with the exhaust pipe enough to shoot it out the back. So i know that must be robbing me of something but what? I posted a pic of the broken area. I doubt it can be the source of all the problems im having.
Today I wake up and let it warm up for about 5 mins. Its relatively warm in az so it doesnt need a choke or nothing. But ive learned if i do leave my choke on for about a minute at 2,000 rpm it will eventually die unless i push in the choke, in which case it will go back to idle for about ten seconds till i have to keep it alive just to eventually die. This will also sometimes happen while idleing normal. So now that i have let it warm up for a while and get in to drive it will be ok and run good for about 5 minutes on my local roads up to 50mph. after about 2 mins of running at 45mph and rising it will begin to die, sputter, and jump and have no more power. If im lucky i can keep it gased at 40mph enough to get to a turn off the road. Regardless of whether im in 3rd or 4th gear it does this. At this point i can pull over let it relax for a min. and drive for about 5 more mins just to get me home. But there is a 50-50 chance when i take off it will begin to jump, die, and bog in 1st and 2nd too. Or another circumstance is today going about 45 preparing to make a left into a 25mph road i brake and down shift into 2nd and it dies in the middle of the process. All the red warning lights come on and all, and i have to drop it into 2nd and get it started again enough to keep rolling.

Sorry about all the reading but I feel like a total newbie and had to post all those things that keep happening to explain my problems cause I have no idea where to go from here. I have recently changed my belts, got a new battery ( but need new terminals) and changed air filter. I was sure it had nothing to do with those but i needed them anyways so ehh. So does anyonethink they can help?
thanks

Fuel filter. Wouldn't hurt to throw in new plugs, distributor cap, and distributor rotor as well.

Do that stuff and then report back as to what happened.

By the way, the fuel filter is behind the driver's seat underneath the car. It's a white plastic drum that's held in with a heavy gauge wire spring - it'll make sense when you see it. When you replace it, make sure to get the direction right, and you may luck out with an easy fix.

Welcome to the forum and the wonderful world of rotarys. Could you explain/describe the exhaust pipe better and post more detailed pics? The SAs, 79-80 have a thermal reactor dxhaust system, in 81 they went to catalytic converters. The reactor exhaust systems are no longer avalible. If the fuel filter is good, then most likely the main has collapsed.

If it turns out to be the exhaust system, you're best bet is to replace the entire system with Racing Beat's standard header system or the streetport system, http://racingbeat.com. While quite expensive it will most likely outlast the car.

since you don't have enough posts to view sig lines yet, I've cut and pasted mine. It includes a link to the online fsms and other rotary related reading. Download, study and enjoy.

thanks for the help, I am about to order a distributor cap, drotor, plugs, and a fuel filter. I do very much wanna get the full exhaust system but thats gonna be a lil bit of savin up lol. What I mean about my exhaust is that it doesnt connect at a certain point. Here are some pictures of the whole system.
You can see i got it in a mess, it was almost draggin on ground so i had to chicken wire her for a lil, and where the green circle is at is where it does not connect .

Go for the dual exhaust setup. That is the better one anyways. More expensive though.

I don't know about where to find the exhaust, but I know if your Sa22 runs anything like my FC, the loose exhaust may well be the cause of most of the problems you listed. On the FC, the O2 sensor is right in the manifold, and a gap there can cause the car to bog down and act monstrously flooded, among other things.
