Trying to get training in tuning

Hi

I am not sure if this is the right place to post but basically i am trying to find somewhere in the US that i can teach/help me tuning of standalone systems. Was interested in AEM and Haltech but i'm willing to learn anything.

I cant seem to find any help/info. I have done EFI 101 classes however they arent software specific nor do they teach wiring etc I am just puzzled at how all successful tuners got their knowledge, they must have had to start somehow

Even if i have to pay an individual tuner just to tutor thats fine.

I will travel to the US for this, (I dont live in the US and of course my country has no tuners or a dyno).

The "successful" tuners learn from the school of hard knocks. While classes and books can give you the base knowledge, there is absolutely no substitute for experience.

As far as the actual wiring, most of it is in the back of the manual that comes with your standalone of choice. Or documented somewhere on this forum.

Keep in mind that there are a lot of "rent a tuners" out there. I've seen most of their work and it is...lacking. Then again, I look at my own tunes from 5 years ago and realize how crappy they are compared to the ones I do today.

Yes i have always suspected that. However I dont live in the US/Canada so thought i would ask.

However it can be taught by an experienced tuner. I just need to be shown to use/setup the software of either AEM,Haltech, microtech or even motec...I know they are all different systems but doesnt matter which one i need to learn. (but AEM and Microtec are what the few cars my country has)

There are no tuners in my country hence why i want to travel to learn. I know experience is the way to learn but i've never seen most of the those software and they arent cars for me to "learn" on here. Also we dont have a dyno.

I know most come with base maps etc but i would just like get someone to run through all the features etc. Fuel and Ignition maps are somewhat easy, its the finer details that i would like to learn too

So to the point, i need someone who tunes to run through the software and its features (whichever brand) and preferably someone in New York USA

the problem isn't knowing people in the area that can tune Rx-7s so much as it is knowing someone that is willing to take the time to help you. the scenario that i see playing out is this: you get some sort of formal mechanical training, then see if you can "work" (you may have to essentially volunteer/apprentice, but who knows?) with someone in the area. with time, you can see and learn while getting some experiences to help you tie things together. when you're confident enough you can ask to take some of the tuning jobs and start proving your worth. now, i can't speak for ANYONE, but i'd imagine there'll be some reluctance with certain people because you'd essentially be their future competition, so keep that in mind when you do find closed doors.

outside of that scenario, just start a project and teach yourself. obviously general understanding is required, but you can teach yourself the details from that point, and of course, bounce your specific questions of people in the forum for whichever system you start with. this is the route i took and i started with MegaSquirt.

good luck.

appreciate your reply

Ok i agree with everything you have said. However i am willing to pay the actual price someone would charge to map/tune a car. In other words i would be the car lol..

Secondly i wont be a threat or pose competition because i dont live in North America and would willing prove via my passport if needed..This is why i want to travel to get the help. I am not going to live there or anything.

Therefore the time frame is going to be a bit difficult since i dont live there, i would be staying in a hotel. I know it won't take more than 2 days.

What i want is to find a person tuning a car as he normally does, the exception is he just needs to say/speak/talk etc what he is doing while i watch.

Even if he doesnt have a car, all i want is for him to open his software (whichever EMS brand) and show me what he would do...How to add/subtract fuel, timing, launch control..basically all the parameters he would go through..I know how to tune just 1 system the PowerFc fairly good and i learnt that from just observing what the guy did..but the all the other ems software looks, and i am sure it is, much more challenging than datalogit

I dont expect to become the best tuner in the world from this but this is the only way i can get the ball rolling...i dont own a rx7 but they are the most popular here (evos are gonna surpass dat soon tho) and when i say popular its just 6 rx7s in the whole country. they bring in guys to tune and those guys are expensive, spend 2 days and are gone ..the tuning most times arent great especially for the prices they charge. On the other hand i would be here all the time to give support.

thats why i wanna get a demonstration of one of those EMS..Once i get that i will be confident enough to tune 1 or 2 of them
