whats the pros and cons of each?
can i do equal amounts of mods to either?
in an older TII, would i have to worry about maintenance on the turbos and shaft play and what not?
field me some answers please!

both have their pros and cons
S4's are lighter but have less power than the S5's.
Some people like the S5 tailights more.
There's lot's of little subtle little differences except for the engine where some big differnences come in - again most of this can be found in FAQ's or with some searching in the 2nd gen section.
When buying a FC just look for lowest ,ileag and/or best condition one you can find and afford and don't worry about S4 vs S5. With time, some elbow grease, and a bit of money you make these cars into anything you want.

Just google s4 and s5. I prefer the s4 body with s5 tail lights. As for upgrades they are limited or discontinued so look forward to searching your *** off for what you want. The s5 engine does have a little more hp but the s4 can easily have more with a good exhaust system. It's true that there are more s4's but most of them look like hell and if you ever need parts you know you'll find them at a pick 'n' pull but the s5 on the other hand is a bitch to find parts for especially turbo.
I have a 87 Turbo II and i have driven a couple of N/A.
If you want speed: Turbo II (unless you have money to upgrade a N/A)
If you want reliability: N/A (remember that old cars need pampering)

Let's not forget about the S5 TPS, seatbelt system, and plastic coolant filler neck. Mazda failed on alot of parts on the S5, where the S4 was great! S5 tails can be swapped out with no bodywork needed.
the plastic neck is is only at thermostat housing not a fill point - but yes the S4's was much nicer
The marginal differences between the cars really doesn't make either one superior over the other, especially now that they're at the age where anything can fail at anytime.

D'oh! I forgot it was at the t-stat. Been a while since I looked carefully at an engine bay.
S5's are just limited numbers now compared to S4's, especially 91 model years.
