Thinking of purchasing
Hello. I'm thinking of purchasing a 1983 RX7 GSL with 34,000 miles on it. I've never owned a sports car and am a little worried about parts availability for the future. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this car other than the radio doesn't work. It has a brand new clutch and has been driven more frequently in the last 6 months than in the past. The seller is a mechanic... he's asking $5000. My main concern is finding parts easily and locally for when I may need them. Help?

At 34,000 miles, if that's true, you just need to replace all of the basic rubber stuff and all the fluids. All of that is easily available in any regular auto parts store. The rest of the hardware still has about 166,000 miles of life in it that would be hard to replace. That's plenty of time to develop friends in the rotary community and to start hoarding the more rare parts so they'll be on hand in the distant future.
"Wearable" items like brake parts are all over eBay and well-stocked auto parts store have them as well.
One thing for sure, get some kind of gas treatment specifically developed to "treat" ethanol blends of gasoline at the pump or you're going to have to replace all of the rubber in the fuel system within about a year's use. If you're still straight gas in TN, you've got no worries.

FB's are usually in a sorry state these days. If you have managed to find a mint one, it is certainly worth some money, but personally I'd never go above $3500 for an FB. It's still too young to be an antique, so unless you want a garage queen I don't think it's worth the cash.
Good job on coming here first however  . I would make a point of bringing a compression tester with you the next time you see this car. If it can't blow more than 95psi or so in each rotor, you should be able to haggle him down a LOT. Also like mar hinted at, check all rubber bits that you have access to. Rubber goes bad over time even if not in use, just to make sure you don't get any nasty surprises.
