Before hand i want to apologize and say that im new to working on any type of car, what i know is based off what i read from this forum so thanks in advance, Well here is my stupid question. So i decided on replacing my air filter with one of the cone shaped ones i've heard it gives a small boost and better gas mileage, but when mentioned to someone about it they told me that i need to get something for the air flow meter in order to make it function properly so my question is, Do i need something for a the air flow meter and if so whats it called? all help would be greatly appreciated! thanks

 

FD's do not use MAF's, they use a MAP based system. In other words, don't worry about it.

so i take it i do need a part for the MAF?

 

Sorry, my bad for not looking at your profile. You'll need some kind of adapter for the MAF. You can probably either make one or buy one off eBay. RX7.com sells a fancy one:

i am sorry if i wake up this thread but i kinda do need help with this, as you can see on my profile i have 1984 gsl se 13b its full stock and im looking into changing the intake but its a huge square with some tray holding it so i kinda cant se a way of just putting a cone filter in it do i need what this tread says or is it a special filter that i need for my car? thx in advanced

 

no you need an adapter that bolts onto the afm and had a round 3 in ring that the filter goes on.

 

Don't just stick a cone filter on there. If you do, you will suck in hot engine bay air and probably gain little to no power, or even suffer a loss. If you are going to go to a cone filter, you need to build a proper cold air box around it.

 

so what should i put there? it haves stock mazda intake on it

 

If you do go with a cone filter, make a cold air box around it. Otherwise stick with the stock Mazda airbox which already has a cold air intake.

 

does that also apply to a 86 rx7? if so how do i go about building one?

 

The 2nd gen has a stock cold air intake as well.

Just search the 2nd gen forum for examples of some fabricated CAIs.

 

dude just LOOK at your intake lol.....it is sucking air from the very front of the car. it's not going to get any colder than that. cone filters are a total scam. they also cost a leg for no reason and filter like junk and let a lot of crap into your engine.

it's even funnier when they come with a METAL pipe, as if metal is a good insulator...

just use some common sense with these things, don't believe everything the ad says.

 

hey they do help a little, and they also sound a lot better, specially with stock exhaust lol

 

you can make the same noise by cutting/grinding the baffling out of your OEM intake
