Smile Straightpiping an 86 N/A GXL?

My cat. rotted out and it sounds horrible when I'm driving. I've been wanting to get a new exhaust for awhile and now seems like a good time. I can get it straight piped for a pretty cheap price from a friend but I was wondering if this could cause any problems or if I need to buy a header too? Any feedback would be great!

The only thing I can possible thing could happen is the 5th/6th ports stop working because there isn't enough back pressure on the exhaust system to control them.

Ok so if I decide to do that I guess it'd be a good idea to also throw in a header and muffler.

yeah dude, dont straight pipe it. right now mines just got a header with the pipes undone, and it doesnt sound good. plus its way too loud. driving it around like that'll get you some attention, but not the attention your gonna like.

Haha yea especially with the cops around my area. They'd be sure to pull me over for it. If straight piping isn't really the best thing, what kind of aftermarket exhaust would go good with my car?

Racing bEat makes a really good system, and if thats too pricey, ive never heard anyone say bad things about pace setter. They both make headers and full cat back exhausts for the 13b

I've decided I'm probably just going to buy a high flow cat and do a full cat back. it sounds like the best option for me.

Then this will be your first time. Pacesetter is practically a curse word on this forum. Their systems are cheap garbage. I know this both from my own experience and from the experience of others on this board. The Pacesetter system sounds tinny and stupid, and they use louvered mufflers and poorly bent pipe and a crappy header design. Stay away. Save your money for a decent exhaust system.

I dont know about not using straight pipes i have an aftermarket header that i got from a friend thats straight back to the mufflers that i got off of ebay.

It's not to loud with the silencers and i dont think that i've lost any power but i don't know I've only had them on for a couple of days.

go for it. if u guys still do emissions then u will have trouble though. try to respect the neighbors too... thats what i do in my supra... then when i'm away, i can release my exhaust gases more rapidly.

They sound melted.

Seriously, a few people report good results from the expensive units, but the vast majority steer clear from them due to the high exhaust temperatures.

well if you happen to buy a racing beat header it should have a pick up for the 5th 6th port on it. not sure about other brands.

or there is this option. http://www.rotaryresurrection.com/2n...elec6port.html not sure how reliable it is. but should be worth trying

I would not go straight pipe on any import engine. For some reason import engines have a high revving pitch to them that gets annoying like a mosquito that will not leave you alone. I would just go with the full Racing Beat exhaust that includes the silencer.

I just installed an Apex'i GT-Spec catback and did a custom cat delete pipe with a resonator. that and the presilencer on the catback plus the muffler and it sounds amazing.

im looking into the borla exhaust systems, and thinking about getting a header with a high flow cat. the borla exhaust system keeps the dual exhaust. i dont know how its going to sound...it says that its a little louder than stock.

I think I have a cracked exhaust manifold also. This kinda sucks. I need to install an entire new exhaust system. Oh well I guess it's better anyway.

i have a straight pipe it lets the engine breathe!!! the more the better. well not a straight like yours but its a exhaust set up. well if you need to smog your 7 in your area then straight pipe is no go. but if you know someone who does it cheap then do it.
