Spirit R OEM fog light instal.
With purchasing my Spirit R, it did not have the factory optional fog lights. So I wanted them, as the plugs for them are on the wiring harness.
I went through amayama.com and ordered the stock fog lights and button.
Part Numbers:
F138-51-680B and F138-51-690B for the fog lights and their respective mounts.
F146-66-4B0 for the Fog light Button.
Upon receiving the parts and literally plug n play installing them, I went to test them. The fog light button illuminates correctly(light amber glow). However, the fog lights to not turn on when button is pressed no mater if car is running or not with headlights on or off.
So I started diagnosing. Checking for fuses or relays. The 15amp fuse under the steering wheel against the kick panel was in its proper location, to my surprise with it not being an option ordered from factory. Then I checked the relay box under the (stock)air intake box and found it was missing the relay. 1990-05 Mazda OEM Relay IMASEN LA10. I ordered the relay, and installed it. Unfortunately still no working fog lights.
So before I start going through wiring diagrams and checking continuity I was hoping someone in the forums might have an easier answer or something I’m missing.
I love the look with the OEM fog lights.
Super easy to plug & play install.
Relay box under OEM air filter box.
Missing Fog Light Relay IMASEN LA10.
Fuse block on RHD under drivers steering wheel on kick panel.

As it was pretty fresh in my mind, I just checked the 12/98 Diagram Section E which covers all series 8 FDs. The 15A Fog fuse feeds the Pin 30/87 side of the relay (switch contacts) via a PINK wire. As for the Coil, one contact goes to both Ground Point 1 & 2 (black, same as headlights), while the other side is a straight line from the switch (White wire). As for the input to the Fog Light Switch, it comes from the TNS Relay (Red/Black), and runs through Joint Box connector JB-01 pin L, then JB-03 Pin I (as in "igloo")
Test for continuity between:
TNS relay to Fog Light Switch (Red/Black wire)
Fog light relay to Fog light switch (white wire, 12v+, relay coil terminal)
Fog light relay to Ground 1+2 (black wire, Ground, relay coil terminal)
Fog light relay to Fog light fuse (Pink wire, 12v+, relay switch terminal)
Fog light relay to Fog lights (Red/Black wire, 12v+, relay switch terminal)
Fog lights to Ground points 1 and 2 (black wire, Ground, where left and right headlights are grounded respective to side)
Also, make sure to test for power delivery at each device too. Wouldn't surprise me if something was missing or disconnected.

To comply with local daytime running light requirements, I had a set of S6 fogs installed. Local shop did the installation, including a second foglight switch. I assume they simply ran the wiring outside the normal harnesses. I suppose you want to keep your car as clean looking as possible. So it would be nice to use existing harnesses. I suspect that somewhere within the wiring runs, the connecting wire is missing. Our DRL requirements also require that side marker/turn signals to be mounted ahead of the front wheel.
I later substituted bright LED bulbs in place of the weak parking light bulbs and had these hooked up to the DRL module.
There was/is a perfect open spot to mount the S6 fogs on the S8 rebar (see below).

it ended up being that the stock wiring harness terminals had a thin layer of corrosion that prevented the connection. A simple fine toothed file cleaned it right up and they work perfectly. Thank you so much for all the information you gave me! I did. end up checking everything in the long run.

Yes I do want to keep everything as stock as possible. It ended up just being corrosion on the wiring harness that needdd to be cleaned away.

This thread came up on Google for me when searching for information and it prompted me to make a correction.
They above fog lights are not the optional fog lights for the Spirit R. They are the OEM standard lights fitted to the Type RS, Type RB-S, Type RB and Type R Bathurst. These are Raybrig brand with a diffused pattern on the lens. Although you could always buy the whole fog light assemblies as a spare part (and still can), they were never sold as an option for cars other than as replacement parts for the above model designations.
There was an optional upgraded fog light for the Spirit R and other models listed in the parts catalogue, but they are Stanley crystal type fog lights as shown below. They have a smooth lens and a different reflector pattern. They are a different part number and no longer available, although they fog lamp itself is identical to optional lights fitted to a number of other JDM cars and can be fitted with a few modifications....or you can try and search for second hand FD ones. They go for big money.

Yes you are correct and I should have titled it:
Series 8 OEM Foglight install on Spirit R.
Thank you for the in depth info. I was able to share pass the information along you provided!
