S5 vs S6 Engine Parts

What is the difference between the S5 and S6 13B Rotor Housings and Rotors? And will I gain any advantage (or disadvantage) from using any combination of the two?

welcome to the board.

i will assume you're inquiring about the S5 Turbo only since it's the direct ancestor, if you will.

for the rotors, i believe they are pretty much the same, but i recently heard that the "weight scale" (the weights that correspond to the A-E stampings) may have been different between the two. that basically means, you may run into balancing issues by mixing them in the same engine even when you adhere to the two-letter rule. again, this is second-hand info, so i don't know this for sure. i have never had any S5 T2 rotors in my stash, so i can't test it. outside of that, i remember in the FD brochures, Mazda said that they adding new coating to the sides of the rotors, but i doubt that will mater if you're dealing with 30-year old used rotors.

for the housings, i believe the S6 housings have better coatings on the sealing surface (mostly to improve lubricity, if i recall). i actually have housings to compare, so if i remember, then i will try to see what else i can observe.

Thank you! I’m going to be modifying both the rotors and housings (balancing, lightening, semi-pp) anyway so the way I understand it, I’m sure that it doesn’t matter which I use - it just has to be the same series.

well, if you're having all that machine work done to the rotating assembly, then the rotor series matters far less between the two. if you have both pairs, then yes, keep them together, but if you have one of each, then don't go out of your way to find a match. the person doing the work should be able to get them in balance.
