I am restoring a 88 RX-7 TII 10AE and am in need of a shop/specialist to help me with the project as I am fairly new to rotaries. I'm in Northern California near Sacramento and I was hoping someone could refer me to a nearby shop that is very knowledgeable. Thanks

Not sure how far your willing to go, but all the nor cal shops I've heard of are located in the bay area. A quick search of the forum turned up ricks rotary in Pleasanton, and rotorsports in Santa Clara.

Yeah, everybody around here seems to use rotorsport, I just went to a meet here last week and multiple cars had their plate frame on, including mine and I've never used them, lol.

I'm looking for a shop in the San Fran area to do a rebuild of my '94 (internal coolant leak). Rotorsport in Santa Clara is too busy to do rebuilds ("call back in a few months"). Has anybody had a rebuild done by Rick's Rotary? He started to assume I would definitely need housings, and a bunch of other parts, which scared me cost-wise. Any other recommendations? I prefer one shop do all the work rather than one doing the R&R and another person doing the rebuild.

you will need a few more posts(10) to view the thread, so start spamming. i do still get quite a few cars trailered down from nor cal for work, due to the cost of the bay area shops.

Hi Rorary Evolution--I looked at your site but it was a little hard to get a ballpark figure for my engine rebuild... would you be willing to give me a ballpark minimum for a rebuild and trailer ship? It won't be an actual quote of course because you haven't seen the car, but a min including shipping ballpark would be awesome--I'm just trying to see whether I really need to keep negotiating with the local guys who want double of what I'm seeing on this forum--both for the R&R and the rebuild. Hey Lisa,

This is the guy I sent you to via email. Aside from the many rotary specialists in socal, he is probably your best option, and can probably beat them on price. I'd be glad to do the work for you, but there's not really a reason you have to send the car cross country to get the job done.

Glad to see you heeding my advice to have one shop do the job from start to finish rather than having 2-3 hands in the pot, which is a good way to wind up on the short end of a finger pointing game.

I would not try to negotiate with a mechanic on their prices when they are that far out of whack. Even if you did get them to match prices with someone like me, you know they'd be disgruntled and looking to rush the job to account for it, so you don't want that either. Just take the prices and your conversations with each person and go with who fits your budget and who gives you that 'warm and fuzzy" feeling that some customers need in order to be comfortable.

Any luck finding a shop that will do the rebuild? I'm moving to the Roseville area in two months and have a 12a I need rebuilding, so I'm curious to know.

most FDs i rebuild are in the $2500 range which includes engine R+R and associated common replacement bits like coolant, engine oil, filter, vacuum lines and fuel lines on the engine. other bits like ripped hoses, belts, clutch, dirty injectors, fuel filter and other common maintenance items are additional if the car is in a state of disrepair. if the engine has a serious failure it could cost another chunk but generally no more than $300-400 additional if it ate a rotor/housing or iron(s).

rotor housing resurfacing(in house, not through Goopy Performance) and Goopy performance apex seals are included in this price, if needed/wanted. Atkins apex seals are used in non turbo applications and can be substituted but i do not warranty turbo engines with their seals any longer.

FC overhauls are usually about $2200-2300 for the same attention mentioned above, parts being slightly cheaper for major failures.

shipping from SF is $400-450 via contracted multi car hauler.

flights to vegas range from $35 to $150-ish to pick the car up and generally cost to drive back is a little over a full tank of fuel/9 hour drive time.

PMing me here or calling the number on my website(702-277-9846) are usually the best ways to get a hold of me, but sometimes it takes a few tries to reach me since i also am the only worker here. most basic jobs(basic meaning stock without any addons to the job) take 2 weeks to complete and have a 1 month+ waiting list depending on current schedule.
