Replacing entire dashboard with a custom one to make it more modern
So my question is has anyone replaced the FD dashboard and replaced it with a completely custom one? My goal for an Fd when I purchase one is to redo the interior like if it was a new car. Like leather panels lcd screen and an infotainment system.
Sorry to break your bubble, but unless you are a proffesional leatherworker and furniture carpenter/desginer its not gonna look more modern, its going to look ****, and like an amateur made it.
I have seen enough upholstery jobs on the stock interior to know its VERY hard to get anything looking like it was OEM.
I have also seen a lot of car stereo guys, even the high end guys, not meeting the target.
What people mostly do here is either a Race-dash adaptation or full carbon. It is possible to get it right, but it require a lot of skill and an eye for design.
The only thing i can think of is if you take say a NC or ND Miata interior and make that fit.

^Agreed. It's your car, but regardless of the silly money and time spent, it will still just look "odd" IMO. Like trying to graft a 80's dash on my 50's era convertible. If you need all the modern accoutrements, I'd just buy a modern car. In the end all you'll do is halve the value of your FD...and likely make a lot of people snicker after seeing it..
you can get a carbon fiber blank gauge pod/hood and install whatever modern LCD tach/speedo system. Also installing an LCD double din in the dash with car play and all that is pretty straight forward. As far as leather goes there is a company in the UK that makes leather covers for most of the panels in the FD or you can pay a shop to cover everything in leather. If you don't go high end and pay the money to do all these things right you will definitely regret it. Redline Goods makes some of the interior stuff. Can find it on ebay they will do any color stitching you want also.
