Thumbs up Rebuilt a 13B before? Post in here!

I'm picking up an 88 Turbo 2 next month that's gonna need a rebuild soon, & I plan on doing it myself.

I've never worked on a 13B, or any kind of wankel for that matter, & that's why I'm curious as to how everyone elses experience that has rebuilt one has went. I'm decently-mechanically inclined & I've rebuilt my share of piston related engines. I know my way around those pretty well, but I'd like to know if rebuilding a rotary is more difficult & if so, please elaborate! I'm very familiar with how a rotary works, most of the parts/components/seals/etc, but in my eyes you never really understand how something works until you actually get your hands on it. If anybody has anything else they'd like to share about their experience, please dont hesitate. I'm all ears, so any feedback or links to good rebuild threads would be greatly appreciated!

Check the 2nd gen FAQ for several rebuild threads.

These videos will help you in the process of rebuild a 13B or 12A engine. While they deal with an older 13B from an RX-5 Cosmo, the engine internals are basically the same for any 12A or 13B. The only real difference is that on engines newer than '85, the coolant o-rings are in the irons instead of the housings as shown in this video.

The first video is engine removal. While it is an RX-5 Cosmo, an car that few will ever see let alone work on, the process will give you the general idea of an engine removal. Steps are similar for most rotary vehicles, it's the details that differ.

The next video is engine disassembly and some cleaning. This is an old carbureted 13B so the accessories bolted to the engine are different than newer engines. However the process of externally disassembling any rotary is about the same. Covered here is also flywheel removal (same for any rotary) and engine parts cleaning.

Cleaning of all engine parts continues in this video. Provided here are examples of how this is accomplished with a minimum of tools and supplies. It's a lot of labor to clean old parts until they are looking new again. At the same time, parts should be inspected.

Finally, here is the engine assembly. This video includes clearancing side seals, assembling all the seals onto the rotor, then assembling all the parts into a 13B short block.

^Thank you for the videos & detailed response! I have actually already watched the engine assembly video before, but I will definitely watch it a few more times & also use it as a good referencing point whenever i begin my rebuild. The other videos are new to me though, & I'm watching them now. Thanks again!

in this community you will find many more who have rebuild experience than with most other car communities.

they're not difficult engines to build if you pay attention to details. it is the parts you use in the building are what make the difference however and in how long your engine will last.
