Pull Motor By Hand
How difficult is it to pull a 13bt by hand w/o an engine lift? I lost contact w/ someone that was gonna help me do it that way so I was wondering how hard it is. Thank you, & please keep the sarcasm & bitchy comments to a low
I pulled my engine out with a lift, then couldn't get it back in the right spot with the lift, so i set it on the subframe and wrestled it into position by hand. I'm not a very muscular guy (6'2", 145lbs wet) and i could JUUUUUUST barely pick the keg up by myself to move it around.
two bigger guys, a 2x4 and some ratchet straps could probably set it in place just fine.
TL;DR Just buy a decent engine hoist or borrow one from a friend

Just a shortblock is about 200 lbs. IIRC. And it's an awkward weight without convenient handles when you need one. It can be done. Against my better judgement I recently helped someone pull theirs. But IMO it isn't worth breaking or damaging something, or worse... hurting someone.
+1 for renting a lift.

Are you sure you're asking for an engine hoist and not a lift? If you say lift they may think you're talking about one of these:

Because a new engine hoist isn't that expensive. Here's a mid-ranged one on Amazon:

As someone who is physically capable of picking up a short block and walking around with it for short distances, but doesn't because it is stupid, I quote a friend who tore his pec while doing sets of 12 with 400+ pounds.
"I realized, WTF am I doing? I'm 35yrs old and I'm not a professional athlete. No one needs to life that much weight, I'm a dumb ***."
This individual now does high reps with 225 but never goes into the 300's. The point? Just because you can, doesn't mean you should...not worth it at all unless you are saving a child trapped under a car or something similar.
Also...when you rent a hoist, make sure it has a load balancer...makes a huge difference.

Well,it isn't easy,you've been told that it isn't easy
Also been warned about Hurting yourself.

I got a Used engine hoist for 120 Cdn..I sold it for MORE..so I made money by Buying it!..
...But you are set to do it..so I guess your friends will see you ,on the porch, recuperating from a hernia or pulled muscle, while they go off with Chicks and have fun..
It's hard to give advice to someone who is already set in their ways, and even if given a new approach they won't accept it.
So..I wish you luck either way..the easy way or the hard way.Personally,I would rather live to fight another day.( and use tools..not a buddy that is called one.!)
Sorry if this is obvious ><
